Andy Devine

Andy Devine (born Peter Devine; 28th February 1942 in Manchester, Lancashire, died 27th January 2022 in Southport, Merseyside) was an English actor who portrayed Shadrach Dingle in Emmerdale from March to December 2000 and again from March 2002 to July 2010. He previously appeared in Emmerdale as Baz Bradstone in July 1998.

Devine began his acting career in the early 1960s. One of his earliest television roles was as 'Draconian' in 6 episodes of Doctor Who. He also had a memorably prominent role as a gay man in all 10 episodes of the iconic Channel 4 drama series Queer As Folk, which ran from 1999 to 2000.

He was primarily on television, whose best known role was Shadrach Dingle on ITV's long-running soap opera, Emmerdale. He played Shadrach on and off from March 2000 and made his final appearance in July 2010. His credits have occasionally been confused with those of the gravelly-voiced American star character actor Andy Devine (1905-1977).

Devine also performed his Shadrach character on ITV's Harry Hill's TV Burp.

He also starred in the The Girl From Tomorrow an early '90s Australian children's drama. He was a shop keeper in the first episode.

In January 2010, Devine (then aged 67) announced that he was to appear less frequently in Emmerdale. On the 23rd July 2010, Devine left Emmerdale after 10 years as his character Shadrach Dingle was killed off in an emotional storyline.

Devine died in Southport Hospital on 27th January 2022, at the age of 79 of a "hospital-acquired pneumonia" following a fall at his home.
