Benjamin "Ben" Dowton was the husband of Beattie Dowton and the uncle of Matt Skilbeck. He arrived in the village in 1973 with Beattie to meet Matt's children.
Ben was left a widower in 1976 when Beattie and Matt's children died after their car was hit by a train. In November 1984, Ben attended Sam Pearson's funeral.
