Brian Baines (born 23rd May 1931 in Bradford, West Yorkshire; died 30th June 2006 in Bradford) appeared in Emmerdale as Detective Superintendent Walker in March 1990.
Baines attended Grange Grammar School before trying to make his living as an actor. After struggling to find success, he returned to school at Bretton Hall College to become a teacher. On the weekends, however, he worked freelance jobs for the BBC in Manchester, becoming full-time in 1970 when the position was made permanent.
His further television credits included The Darling Buds of May, Stay Lucky, Faith, Last of the Summer Wine, the documentary series Strange But True?, The Final Cut, Coronation Street, Hetty Wainthropp Investigates and Heartbeat. He also had an uncredited role in the Oscar-winning epic Titanic.
In addition to his acting roles, he was known in the Yorkshire region for providing the early evening bulletins for Look North and was one of the main continuity announcers for BBC North in the 1970s and 1980s.
