Brook Cottage (previously Mill Brook Cottage) is a 3 bedroom cottage in Emmerdale that is currently home to Diane Sugden, Doug Potts, Bernice Blackstock and Gabby Thomas.

History

In the late 1930s a Mr Patterson lived at the cottage and fought at Dunkirk in 1940 in which he saved his batallion but lost a leg. After the war he returned to Beckindale and was nicknamed Peg Leg Patterson. He died in the house.

2004 - 2006: The Thomases

Brook Cottage was first seen living in by main characters in 2004, when the building was used as the vicarage for St. Mary's Church. Ashley Thomas lived there with his daughter Gabby Thomas . His curate Ethan Blake stayed in Brook Cottage for a short while.

In 2005, Laurel Potts moves in with Ashley and they marry. Ashley's neice Jasmine Thomas and his father Sandy Thomas also move in to Brook Cottage during this time, much to the delight of Gabby as her family grows. During 2005, Steph Stokes briefly stays at the house.

In 2006, after Jasmine, Debbie Dingle and Daz Eden accidentally set the vicarage on fire, the Thomases are forced to move to Mulberry Cottage .

2007 - 2011: The Nicholls and The Kings

Following the vicarage fire in 2006, Brook Cottage remained vacant until Scarlett Nicholls gazumped Matthew King to purchase the property. Scarlett moved in with her mum Carrie Nicholls, and her sister Lexi King moved in shortly afterwards. Carrie emigrated to Canada in 2008, leaving Lexi and Jimmy King to look after Scarlett. In late 2008 King and Sons growing debts caused Scarlett and Lexi to be evicted from Brook Cottage.

The house remained vacant for a short while until Jimmy came into settlement money after accidentally being shot. Jimmy moved in with his partner Nicola, and newborn daughter Angelica . After a few years the family upsize their house and move to Mill Cottage .

2011 - 2012: The Spencers

When Ali Spencer comes to Emmerdale to visit her sister Rachel Breckle, she informs her that there is a rentable cottage in the village. Ali comes to view it and tells Rachel that she really likes it, so they visit Declan Macey and ask if she can rent the cottage. Former occupant, Nicola King overhears and isn't happy when Declan agrees. Ali soon returns to the village with Rachel and her children, Amelia and Sean, to move in but Sean is unhappy when Ali's girlfriend, Ruby Haswell, joins them.

She, Ruby and the children live quietly for a while until Declan's sister, Megan Macey, takes a shine to the cottage and gives them notice to leave as she plans to live there with her son, Robbie Lawson. When Declan learns of this, he is unhappy and tells Megan to withdraw the notice, but Megan has already gone to check the house out. Ali complains to Declan and as they return to the cottage, Rachel slaps Megan. Megan blackmails the family by threatening to call the police unless the Spencers vacate the cottage within 24 hours. Ali, Ruby and the children leave Brook Cottage to move in with Rachel, leaving the house free for Megan.

2012 - 2014: The Maceys

Following the eviction of the Spencers, Megan Macey moves into Brook Cottage with her son Robbie Lawson. Following a fire intentionally set at Home Farm by Declan, he stays with Megan for a short stint. When Home Farm is fixed up, Megan moves in to help Declan recover.

During 2014, Sam Dingle and Tracy Shankley are thrown out of Wishing Well Cottage by Lisa Dingle , as she is suspicious of Tracy. Robbie allows them to stay with him, however when Tracy cons Sam out of his money, she leaves the village and Sam moves back home.

In late 2014, when Robbie is accidentally killed by Declan, Brook Cottage becomes vacant again.

2014: The Andrews

While Brook Cottage is vacant, Dom Andrews and his daughter Gemma rent the house. During 2014, Harriet Finch - the new vicar - stays while she is dating Dom.

While Dom and Harriet are sleeping together, he misses a phonecall from Gemma after her fight with Belle Dingle . She later collapses is found by Harriet a day later. Gemma dies in hospital, and a devastated Dom leaves Emmerdale for good.

2015 - 2016: The Thomases

In 2015, following a relationship with Harriet, Ashley Thomas moves into Brook Cottage with her, thus the house becomes the vicarage again. Sandy and Arthur also move in with them, while Laurel was with Marlon Dingle and struggling with her alcoholicism. Sandy stays for a short while before moving in with Edna Birch .

Later in 2015, Ashley was diagnosed with dementia, and told Harriet, Sandy, his children and Laurel. When he started accidentally calling Harriet 'Laurel', their relationship broke down and Harriet realised that Ashley and Laurel were still in love. Harriet moved in with Edna and Sandy, and Laurel moved into Brook Cottage.

Ashley, Laurel and Arthur lived in Brook Cottage until 2016. Ashley and Laurel purchased Mulberry Cottage from Cain Dingle, on behalf of Debbie Dingle who had left the village, so that they could spend Ashley's last days in their old family home.

2015 - 2016: Diane and Doug

Since 2016 the house has been home to Doug Potts and Diane Sugden . Bernice Blackstock moved in with her mother after her divorce from Lawrence White, and her daughter Gabby Thomas moved in following Ashley's death in 2017.

Brook Cottage is a detached cottage so does not adjoin any properties, however behind the cottage is the back entrance to Café Main Street .
