Biography[]
1974-2000: Early life[]
12 year old Cain
Cain was born on the 30th November 1974, as a result of an affair between his mother Faith Dingle and her brother-in-law Zak Dingle. Faith was married to Zak's brother Shadrach who brought Cain up thinking he was his biological son, unaware that he was his uncle all along. When Cain was 12-years-old, Faith left, tired of Shadrch's abuse. In her absence, he started taking out his anger on Cain instead. Cain took this and protected his younger sister, Chas Dingle from Shadrach’s anger, until Cain was old enough to fight back. In early 1989, 14-year-old Cain had a fling with his then 12-year-old second-cousin Charity and unbeknownst to Cain, she gave birth to their daughter, Debbie, in October 1989. However, the child was taken away from Charity and she was kept apart from Cain, who thus never found out about his daughter until many years later even though Shadrach was aware of the situation.
16-year-old Cain
About two years later Cain had a relationship with Cara Robinson, a woman he worked in a bar with. Shadrach had a racist attitude towards her and used violence to attempt to make her stay away from Cain. Faith heard of the situation she wanted to help calm things but was horrified when she learnt that Cara was pregnant. As she knew Shadrach would never accept his son fathering a mixed raised baby, she coerced Cara into leaving Cain and never telling him about the existence of their son, Nate.
In 1991, Cain met his younger half-brother, Caleb who found him at the garage where he was working. Cain lied to Caleb that their mother was dead and tried to get him to leave, but Caleb was determined to get to know his big brother. Cain soon relented as he bonded with Caleb and promised to introduce him to their sister, Chas. However, that day Chas announced that she was pregnant and Cain realised they couldn’t take Caleb in if they had to take care of a baby.
The next day, Cain told Caleb that he didn’t want him around and to get lost. Caleb then stole a car from the garage and Cain got in to stop him. They argued and soon the police pulled them over. Caleb panicked as he had already been arrested, so Cain offered to take the fall as long as Caleb never bothered his family again. Afterwards, it turned out the car had been used in a robbery, so Cain got three years in prison for the crime.
Years later, in March 2000, Cain heard of his cousin Butch's death and decided to attend his funeral.
2000-2004: Feud with the Tates[]
Cain's first appearance in 2000
In March 2000, Cain arrives for his half brother Butch's funeral, blaming businessman Chris Tate for his death, as the lorry that crashed into the bus causing the bus crash that had led to Butch's death was owned by Chris. Cain also blamed Butch's death on police officer Angie Reynolds and as a revenge tactic, seduces Angie's daughter, Ollie, manipulating her into believing he cared for her despite him sleeping with her mother. However, Angie decided to put an end to their affair as she tried to rebuild her marriage, however, Cain wasn’t going to be spurned without a fight and vowed to win her back or ruin her. He began sleeping with Ollie, and pushes Ollie's grandfather Len down a flight of stairs and then made their affair public which meant Angie got fired from her job.
Angie dies in Cain's arms
In November 2002, to get back at him, Angie set Cain up by pretending to him that she was in on a scam that to rob a Tate Haulage truck, but she had in fact been working with the police and a car chase ensued. The car Angie was in went off the road and desperate to help her, Cain stopped running from police to rush to her aid. Angie was dying; severely injured from the crash, she died in Cain’s arms. He begged her to tell him she loves him but she tells him how much she loves her children.
Cain later found out that his cousin Charity was seeing Chris so Cain attacks her. Later, Paddy and Emily Kirk's foster child, Debbie Jones, who befriends the Dingles shows Cain a picture of her biological mother. He soon realised that Debbie was his and Charity's daughter. Despite being a con artist and hard man, Cain had grown to love Debbie and he and Charity constantly clashed over their daughter but, when the pair took Debbie on a family trip, Cain and Charity's love was rekindled and they began an affair. Chris also found out around that time that he had an inoperable and terminal brain tumour so a plan formed; he was going to frame Charity for his murder. What Chris didn’t know is that Cain was planning to murder his rival but he never got the chance - Chris drank poison having arranged for Charity to come to the house for dinner, and he correctly assumed everyone would think Charity had done the deed. Cain showed up and was there as Chris died so fearing that he and Charity would be charged with Chris's death, he got Debbie and fled the village. He eventually came back and was cleared of all charges while his and Charity's love grew stronger as she faced life in prison.
2004-2006: Sadie King and becoming a grandfather[]
After Charity's conviction for Chris' murder is quashed, she realised that she couldn’t spend the rest of her life slumming it with the Dingles. She was a woman used to having money and luxuries by then and so she moved on to the new local millionaire, Tom King, and they planned to marry. But Sadie, Tom's daughter-in-law, hired Cain to make Tom think Charity has been unfaithful. She wasn’t of course – Charity really did care for Tom – but he set her up by forcefully kissing her while Sadie had someone taking a photo which she showed to Tom on their wedding day. The plan worked; Tom threw her out. Never one to let sleeping dogs lie, Charity took revenge on Sadie by sleeping with her husband Jimmy. She also got Jimmy to confess to his part in the plot in the hope that Tom would take her back when he knew the truth. A furious Tom expelled Sadie and Jimmy from the King family and Cain was similarly banished from the Dingle homestead. Charity left the village shortly after and Sadie and Cain ended up in bed together. Cain was delighted about this and tried to get Sadie to sleep with him again. However, she rejects him, so he kills her beloved dog, Damon.
Cain and baby Sarah
Cain and Debbie then moved into Butler's Farm with Andy Sugden. Debbie and Andy quietly got closer and began a relationship behind Cain's back which was to result in the birth of baby Sarah in June 2005. Debbie kept the pregnancy a secret but when it all came out – no pun intended – Cain immediately bonded with his granddaughter and lavished love on her. However, all his best efforts to become a good family man were wasted on Debbie who rejected her daughter from the beginning. He kept on trying and desperate for an end to the situation, Debbie begged Emily to leave the village and take the baby with her. The lonely Emily happily agreed and slipped away with Sarah but when the Dingles found out, they were furious.
Debbie walks in on Cain and Jasmine
Cain was beside himself and vowed to find his granddaughter and bring her home however he couldn't find Emily and Sarah so he returned to the village harbouring a simmering hatred for Debbie for giving away the child. He was intent on making Debbie pay for what she’d done and set about making her life hell. Things got so bad between them all that Debbie ended up moving out and went to live with Ashley Thomas and his niece Jasmine who became very close friends and later started dating. Seeing this, Cain realised that he could hurt Debbie by using Jasmine so he began a charm offensive on the impressionable young girl. He slept with Jasmine and arranged things so that Debbie would walk in on them. Hurt, Debbie vowed to get her own back on Cain, no matter how long that might take.
Meanwhile, Sadie paid Cain to sabotage the King's new show home that was to house Cain's cousin Marlon and his wife Donna by driving a JCB into it but, while he did as she asked, she refused to sleep with him, making the passionate Cain furious. At the time, Sadie was having an affair with Jimmy's brother, Matthew and Cain threatened to tell Matthew that he and Sadie were sleeping together. Sadie retaliated by telling Ashley that Cain had been sleeping with Jasmine which resulted in the Dingles once again evicting Cain and allowing Debbie to move back in. In his fury, he told Jimmy that Sadie had arranged the show home devastation. Defeated all round, Cain left the village for a while but was soon back when he found out the Jasmine was pregnant. He was delighted at the thought of being a father but Debbie persuaded the confused Jasmine to have an abortion which Sadie – who was chuffed to have a chance to destroy Cain's dreams of fatherhood – paid for. On the day the abortion was to take place, Cain searched frantically for Jasmine and Debbie but by the time he found them, the deed was done and Cain was devastated but Debbie was pleased to twist the knife and she let it be known that she’d promised revenge on Cain and she’d now got it. In the meantime, the King's plans for the new houses in the village forged ahead but what they didn’t know is that when Cain crashed into the show house, he’d fractured a gas pipe causing a dangerous buildup of gas. Despite Jimmy's temporary repair, on the day of the grand opening – which most of the village attended – a spark ignited the gas, causing a huge explosion and sending the house toppling to the ground, brick by brick, and left young mum Dawn Woods – Terry’s wife and Bob Hope’s daughter – dead, as well as villager Noreen Bell and estate agent David Brown. Cain found out about the explosion and was wracked with guilt, unlike Sadie who didn’t give a stuff.
2006: Tom King's kidnap and departure[]
A few weeks later, Cain's brother Sam helps his cancer-stricken wife Alice to die and was to be charged with her murder, so Cain accepts responsibility for Alice's death. Cain couldn’t bear the thought of another motherless child suffering as Dawn's son had because of his actions. Him taking the blame for the death of Alice – which saved Sam – made him the new Dingle family hero, and even the embittered Debbie was impressed. Sadie showed a partially human side by anonymously paying his bail. At Alice's funeral, Sadie once again recruited Cain into helping her get back at Tom and Matthew King; she told Cain that they could both get rich by kidnapping Tom and demanding a ransom. However, Sadie's plan didn’t go as expected because Debbie revealed to Cain that Sadie had paid for Jasmine's abortion, which left him heartbroken and more vengeful than he’d ever been before. After a nasty and emotion fuelled confrontation with Sadie, Cain followed her to the pre-arranged meeting place and while Sadie and Tom discussed the house collapsing, Cain emerged from the woods with a shotgun and kidnapped both Tom and Sadie. After hiding out in a barn for the night, Cain returned to the village and was quizzed by his sister Chas as to whether he’d had anything to do with Tom and Sadie's disappearance. Cain denied any involvement but eventually, the police closed in on Cain so he ran with his hostages in tow. However, the police chased him to a nearby quarry where Cain diverted their attention by sending his empty car over the cliff, making everyone believe Tom and Sadie were inside it. While the police were busy searching the quarry lake for their bodies, Cain attacked two police officers and disguised himself by wearing one of their uniforms.
Cain leaves Emmerdale in a plane on 21st September
Later, after pretending to shoot Sadie, Cain made Tom call Chas to arrange delivery of the ransom money. When this was done, Cain fled following a tearful goodbye to Debbie who begged him to take her with him. Cain refused but later, he arranged for money to be posted to his daughter to help her set up a business. When Cain got to the airport – where Sadie was by now waiting for him – he left her stranded and vowed to change his life. Cain left a final message to Debbie on her voicemail telling her to ignore what everyone else said; he told her he wasn’t with Sadie and ended by telling Debbie he loved her.
2009-2011: Return[]
In February 2009, Cain was arrested on his return to the country after Andy reports him to the police. He was attempting to return to support and help Debbie, who was being held on remand for the murder of PC Shane Doyle just before Christmas. He hired a lawyer who specialised in self-defence cases to help Debbie, paying him in advance. Cain returned to the village on 28th April 2009 to help Debbie gain custody of Sarah. After finding her father in her house, they hug and immediately went up to Butlers Farm. Cain demanded to know what's been happening with the Kings and Debbie reveals that Tom got murdered on his wedding day and the business is starting to go down now that Jimmy and Carl are driving trucks for King and Sons after going bankrupt, which also cost them Home Farm. Cain was surprised to hear that Matthew is dead after a car accident on his wedding day.
Cain returns to Emmerdale
Debbie told him that Andy was refusing her access to Sarah. He warns Andy that Debbie will get custody after giving Sarah a princess dress. Later that day, Cain sees Carl and Jimmy. They demanded their money back but Cain refused. Jimmy punches Cain in the stomach and Debbie attempts to break the fight up but Cain tells her to back off and continues to taunt the Kings before Carl punches Cain. Jimmy and Carl beat him up and Cain does not fight back, much to Debbie's horror. However, Eli and Marlon then come to Cain's rescue and Jimmy drags Carl inside. Cain is pleased to be back in business. He supported Debbie in her custody battle, which she eventually won
He then began flirting with Maisie Wylde, Andy's ex-girlfriend, and daughter of Mark and Natasha Wylde who took an instant dislike to Cain. After a brief fling with Maisie, Cain set his sights on Faye Lamb, first wife of Mark. They flirted for a while but it didn't come to anything as he realised she was using him to make Mark jealous. Cain also took an instant dislike to Michael - Debbie's new boyfriend but they didn't care. Cain was proved right when Michael admitted that he was getting married in a few days to his pregnant fiancee. In October 2009, Cain and Debbie crashed the wedding and were shocked to discover that his fiancée was Charity. Michael called the wedding off, after discovering that Charity had lied about being pregnant. Cain warned Debbie not to have anything to do with Charity but on discovering that she and her young son, Noah, were homeless, invited them to stay with her. Charity took her up on it and moved in but took some persuasion to stay. She and Carl planned to rob Cain of his money but Cain realised and went after her. He and Debbie caught Charity in the act and refused to believe her when she said she was replacing it. Cain also threw her and Noah out so she moved in with Marlon. He gave her the money she had been about to steal and after Debbie's reassurance that they were okay, left the village. He returned on 22nd December bearing presents for Debbie and Sarah. He was still angry with Charity, but they reconciled on Christmas Day 2009 after he agreed to marry her when she proposed.
In 2010, Cain was taken back when he learned that Shadrach had died. Although Cain had never appreciated Shadrach it was clear that he felt a lot of grief over his loss. Cain finds Mark's wallet in the woods after Mark was killed by his wife Natasha at the start of the year, and blackmails her and her son Nathan as he thinks there is something sinister behind Mark's disappearance, however when Sam's dog, Alfie, digs up the body and Nathan frames his half-brother and Cain's employee, Ryan Lamb, for Mark's murder, and Ryan is convicted. Cain tells Maisie that Nathan and Natasha paid him to keep quiet and he cannot help Ryan without incriminating himself for fraud and blackmail. After seeing Nathan lie in the witness box, Cain kidnaps him to keep Sam quiet about the wallet. He holds him hostage in an abandoned barn, which is uncalled for, threatening to kill him if Ryan is found guilty. When Maisie learns what her mother and brother did, she calls the police and telling them her mother killed her father.
Charity and Cain almost get married
Charity and Cain set a date for the wedding, but an eager Cain brings it forward. On 11th March 2010, his sister Chas, who is in on the plan, takes Charity into Leeds, tricking her into thinking they're going shopping. Charity realises what's actually happening as they reach the registry office and see the entire Dingle clan stood outside. She reacts badly and although she agrees to change into her wedding dress, she finds herself unable to go through with the ceremony. Later, in The Woolpack, she explains to Cain that she does love him but isn't ready to settle down and get married. They remain together, but Debbie leaves for Jersey, stressed by her parents' argumental antics. In April 2010, Bored and looking for a thrill, Cain and Charity decided to make fast money by stealing wealthy men's cars. The first time they attempt their scheme it is a resounding success after Charity successfully steals a businessman's keys after flirting with him in the bar of a local hotel.
When Charity begins working for Jai Sharma, Cain finds himself jealous believing the two are having an affair. Despite warnings from Debbie he cannot help but threaten Jai, warning him to keep his hands off Charity, however, he doesn't let himself be threatened and buys Charity a car to win her affections, angering Cain further. On 10th February 2011, Cain is upset when Jai takes Charity to a hotel in Leeds for a business trip for the evening. Jai tries to seduce her, however, Charity makes it clear that she won't cheat on Cain, despite his flaws and her attraction towards Jai. They book separate rooms for the night in another hotel.
Cain and Faye kiss after their one-night-stand
Later, Cain arrives at the first hotel with flowers for Charity, but on finding out that she and Jai have already checked out and only had one room, he assumes the worst and returns to the village, where he chats up and has a one-nigh-stand with Faye Lamb, both parties aware that the relationship is nothing more than a rebound. When Charity returns, she sees Cain leaving Faye's house and witnesses the pair kiss. Furious, she slaps Faye, packs her bags and leaves Tug Ghyll. Initially, Cain is nonchalant and tells Debbie that Charity will be back, but soon it becomes clear that she has moved on from Cain when she moves into Holdgate Farm with Jai and the two begin a relationship. Cain tries to win Charity back on multiple occasions but she insists they are over and she is happy with Jai now.
On 10th March 2011, Cain goes as far as holding Charity hostage at a hotel after tricking her to come there by sending her an anonymous invite and a new dress which she assumed were from Jai. She was shocked to find Cain there waiting for her but decided to stay so they could talk. They had an emotional heart-to-heart but Cain blew his chances by repeatedly referring to Charity as a 'tart' and a 'whore', before attempting to smother her with a pillow and breaking down in tears. Charity explained that to Cain that he would never be able to let her forget about her past as a prostitute and told him that deep down he hated her for it, and despite his claims to the contrary he could not help but refer to her as tart once more when she told him she chooses Jai over him. Debbie later cursed Cain for ruining things and he told her she was letting go of Charity - for now.
2011-2012: Judgement Day[]
Cain and John Barton
In April 2011, Cain is on the rebound after Charity refuses to forgive him for cheating with Faye, and sleeps with Amy Wyatt. When he rejects her, she tells him she is pregnant with his child. He coerces her into agreeing to have an abortion but her pregnancy is too far advanced. However, Amy, too scared of what Cain will do, tells him and Victoria Sugden that she had the abortion. Moira decides to purchase a Land Rover from Cain and agrees to pay him the money in weekly installments. Moira asks Cain to keep the arrangement from her husband John, as their marriage is under a lot of strain and is quite fragile at that moment. Cain tells John about the arrangement and Moira goes to see Cain where they fight. Moira kisses Cain and they have sex. Moira regrets this instantly but they soon begin an affair Moira pleads with Cain not to tell John, however, Cain reveals the affair by taunting John about Moira's birthmark on her thigh leading to Moira and John to split up.
Cain continues to dislike Jai so when Jai's sister Priya turns up in the village and shows an interest in him, Cain uses this to his advantage. Jai accuses Cain of stealing from his parents' house and causing their father's road accident. Cain sends Jai a photo of Priya asleep nude and persuades her to call the police on Jai for assaulting her. Meanwhile, Amy gives birth to Cain's son, Kyle, in a cemetery; thinking he is dead, she panics and leaves him in a phonebox. Hazel Rhodes and Lisa Dingle find him and call an ambulance. Amy admits to being his mother, and Cain realises she lied about the abortion. Priya forgives Cain until she learns he is the father of Amy's baby and slept with Moira. Cain is arrested when Jai reports his threats to the police but Cain is released with a caution. When Cain enters the Woolpack, he begins taunting John and when Chas refuses to serve him, he eyeballs each customer, insulting them one by one. Debbie throws him out after finding out about Amy. Cain confronts John, Moira, Chas and Amy before leaving the village.
Cain is viciously attacked and left for dead
As Cain walks along the outskirts of the village, he stops and zips up his coat. Cain hears footsteps behind him but before he turns, he is struck hard on the back of the legs with a metal object and falls to the ground. Through his pain, he clearly recognises his attacker and is severely hit over the head. Debbie's boyfriend Cameron Murray later finds Jai standing over a badly injured Cain and calls an ambulance. Cain is rushed to hospital, Jai and Charity are arrested and questioned by the police. John is also arrested when Moira reveals to one of the investigating officers how John hurt his hand. While John is arrested, Cain takes a turn for the worse where it is discovered that he has a clot on the brain and needs urgent surgery, which goes well.
When Cain wakes up Chas, Aaron and Charity is by his side and asks him to reveal his attacker. He claiming that Jai attacked him, wanting revenge on him and Charity. As a result, Charity is excluded by the Dingles. Amy visits Cain and while he is sleeping, she tells him she might keep her baby. She is unaware that he has heard everything. Cain continues to claim Jai attacked him but on 5th January 2012, sick of the fights between Charity and the rest of the family, Zak admits that he was responsible and Cain tells the police that a man he knew from Spain attacked him.
2012-2014: The Bartons[]
Cain struggles to get over the attack and becomes a lot softer. Physically weak, Cain spends months trying to recover from the attack. In March 2012, he saves Holly Barton's life when she relapses on heroin. Even though he is still weak, Cain is able to drag Holly into his car and take her to hospital. Angry that Cain was the one who saved Holly and still upset about his father's death, Holly's brother Adam confronts Cain at the garage and demands an apology for what Cain has done to his family but Cain refuses. Adam then sets the garage on fire, trapping Cain inside and leaves Cain to die. Racked with guilt, Adam comes back and saves him. Adam confides in his best friend Aaron that he was the one who set fire to the garage. Seeing Adam's pain at the grieving of John, Aaron tells the police he started the fire and is able to persuade Cain into lying to police and saying Aaron set the fire. Cain then helps Aaron flee the police by getting a fake passport for him.
Cain notices that Cameron, Debbie's boyfriend, is starting to act suspicious and vows to find out what is happening. He does not know that Cameron is having an affair with his sister Chas. Cameron and Chas end their affair but Cain is still distrustful until Cameron claims he is only acting suspicious as he is planning to propose to Debbie. Cain, still doubtful tells Chas that when he finds out what Cameron is up to he will kill him and the slag he catches him with. On 17th October 2012, Debbie gives birth to baby Jack and Cain is shocked with pride as he watches his grandson being born and is happy when he finds out that Jack is a match for Sarah and that Sarah will survive. However, their happiness is short-lived and Cain feels furious and betrayed when he soon finds out about Chas and Cameron's affair. When they try to flee he smashes the car window and drags Cameron out the car. He is then arrested along with Charity after he makes a series of threats to Cameron. He is released without caution shortly afterwards.
Cain and Moira making their relationship public
After Moira has a steamy affair with Adam's best friend Alex Moss, Cain makes a deal with Moira that if Alex works at the garage then Zak can have Alex' old job at the farm. Moira sees Cain's vulnerable side and the couple begin seeing each other in late 2012. They agree to keep their relationship secret, to begin with. However, on New Year's Eve they announce their relationship by kissing in the Woolpack. Adam disapproves of the relationship and starts giving Moira grief about it. Chas is released from prison and Moira encourages Cain to make amends with her however he feels that if he does he will be betraying Debbie.
In February 2013, Cameron returns from Jersey and proposes to Chas. Cain is shocked at this and threatens Chas, telling her she should leave the village. Shortly after, Cameron arrived at the garage and the two men were involved in a brawl. Chas tried to break up the fight between her brother and fiancée but was knocked to the ground. Cain stopped to check she was OK, but an enraged Cameron appears behind Cain, armed with a wrench, ready to strike. However, Cameron backs down. Debbie becomes uncontrollable after the engagement and starts to do lots of dodgy business deals and Cain constantly has to protect her. Angry at the danger she is putting Sarah in, Cain and Debbie's relationship becomes hostile. Cain makes amendments with Chas. In April, Moira learns that she is pregnant with Cain's baby but she soon miscarries. Cain and Debbie have an argument, and Cain makes it clear that he holds her responsible for Moira's miscarriage. He then leaves Tug Ghyll and goes to live with Moira at Butler's Farm.
Adam, still angry at Cain and Moira's relationship, tries to set Cain up. He notices a bit of flirtation between a Cain and a girl called Natalie. Adam sets up a party and pays Natalie to sleep with Cain. Cain realises what Adam is up to and pushes Adam against a wall and threatens him. The following day Adam finds out about Moira's miscarriage and tells Cain he's glad Moira lost the baby. Cain then punches him but is stopped by Zak before things escalated. Adam then shows his mum his black eye and tries to persuade Moira to leave Cain. She sides with Cain and Adam leaves the farm.
With Moira and Adam still at odds, Cain dishes Adam a few home truths. Meanwhile, Robbie Lawson steals Cain's car keys and concocted a plan where he and Adam can come out on top and get some money. Fuelled by drink, Adam and Robbie accidentally run over a pregnant Kerry Wyatt. Scared, they drive off leaving an injured Kerry alone in the road. Cain reports his car missing while Moira later finds the dented car with bloodstains on it. Disturbed and disgusted, Moira blames Cain. Later Adam returns home and asks for Cain's help and tells him what's happened. Cain hatches a plan and sets fire to the car, destroying the evidence. Moira learns that Kerry was knocked down by a car and chucks Cain out, believing him to be responsible. She invites Adam to stay back with her, telling Adam that he was right about Cain all along. Adam agrees and does not tell his mother it was actually him. Adam eventually admits he ran over Kerry, and Cain and Moira reunite. Cain helps Marlon trace down Laurel Thomas's carjacker after Laurel goes after him with a pair of scissors. They manage to get there in time as he is about to attack Laurel again.
Cain repairs his strained relationship with Debbie after his cousin's Gennie's death. Cain begins to notice Cameron is hanging around Debbie and asks Debbie if she is seeing him again; Debbie firmly denies this and Cain is satisfied when Debbie publicly tells Cameron to leave her alone. In Gennie's funeral Chas realises that Cameron and Debbie are seeing each other again. Struggling to contain her emotion Chas runs out the church whilst giving a speech about Gennie. Cain runs after her and demands to know what Cameron has done - she replies he did Debbie. Fuming, Cain punches Cameron at Gennie's wake and Debbie and Cameron reveal that they are now a couple.
Cameron comes to live with Debbie but while he is moving his stuff into the house, Cain taunts him. Cameron taunts him back, leading to Cain knocking him unconscious and dragging him into his car. Debbie witnesses this and tries to stop Cain, however, Cain drives off. Desperate to know where Cain is taking Cameron, Debbie starts shouting at Charity and Chas, demanding to know where he is. Charity reveals that he might be at the quarry as that was where she and Cain once planned to kill Cameron and fake his suicide. Debbie rushes to her car and drives to the quarry. She finds a tied and gagged Cameron locked in the back of the car while Cain wipes his fingerprints off the steering wheel. Debbie begs Cain to stop but Cain ignores her and proceeds to push the car off the cliff. Unable to physically stop him, Debbie stands in front of the car. Cain demands Debbie to move however she does not, saying he will have to push her off as well. Cameron pleads with Debbie to move, knowing that the ground underneath is crumbling and it is unsafe. Debbie does not relent and Cain emotionally says that she is choosing Cameron over her family to which Debbie replies, “please don't make me choose". Cameron shouts at Cain to let him go and Cain does so. Cameron then punches Cain but Debbie stops him from doing more. Cain agrees to be civil but warns Cameron that he'll be watching him.
In September 2013, Debbie finds Gennie's Dictaphone and realizes Cameron murdered Gennie. She tells Chas who takes her to the police. With not enough evidence to charge, the police bug Debbie's house wanting to tape Cameron's confession. Cain starts to get suspicious of Debbie's behaviour and demands to know the truth. He is shocked and horrified when he hears of Cameron's murders and is worried about Debbie's safety. However, he supports her with her plan. Cain watches with the police as Debbie is wired and sent into her house with Cameron. Cain gets agitated as he watches it unfold and tries to intervene. Cameron confesses and Debbie shouts the code word, alerting Cameron who locks them in the house together. Cain gets arrested as he tries to get into the house to save Debbie. The Dingles watch as Charity complains at Cain and Chas for not telling her about Cameron sooner. Debbie escapes and has an emotional embrace with Cain before he is taken to the cells for a night while Cameron is arrested for the murders of Carl, Alex and Gennie.
Cain proposes to Moira in October 2013
With Declan Macey demanding a great sum of money from Moira, Moira fears she to pay it off she will have to sell Butler's Farm. Cain decides to take matters into his own hands and asks Charity for some help. They return to their old scams by stealing a car again. However, Cain has to help Charity as she is nearly caught by her husband Jai. The money buys Moira and Cain some time. Adam encourages Cain to raise the money however Moira wants Cain to do it legally. Cain swallows his pride by asking Jai to invest, however Jai refuses. During a heated argument, Cain suggests he should marry Moira however they decide to ignore it. Cain then reverts to his old ways, calling an old acquaintance called Marcus. Marcus asks Cain to help with a drug raid, however, Cain is disgusted with what Marcus is planning. After receiving a call from Moira, declaring her love for him, Cain backs down and ropes Ross Barton into the task, unsure of his true identity. The same night, on 24th October 2013, Cain proposes to Moira however before Moira can answer, Ross barges in with a gunshot wound.
Covered with blood after being shot, he blackmailed Cain into helping him by threatening to tell Moira about the job whilst she was out of the room. Moira wanted to call an ambulance but Cain and Ross insisted that she couldn't otherwise they would both be arrested. Instead, they had Moira's friend and veterinary surgeon Vanessa Woodfield tend to the wound. Cain tried to force Ross to leave at the earliest opportunity but Moira soon realized that Ross was the son of James Barton, John's brother, and therefore her nephew, whom she had not seen for around twenty years after James and John fell out. Moira allowed Ross to stay at Butler's Farm until he recovered, leaving Cain feeling uneasy. Cain tried to convince Moira to get Ross to leave but feeling sorry for him she wanted him to stay for a couple more days. Cain then informed Moira that Ross was Laurel's carjacker, leading to Moira to also want to get rid of him, but she was forced to reconsider when Vanessa insisted he needs a few more days of rest. Moira later finds out that it was initially Cain's job however forgives him.
After originally turning down Ross' offer of stealing Declan's car, Cain relents after seeing how sad Moira is about having to sell the farm. At Declan's party, Cain hatches up a plan for Ross to dress up as valet and then pass the cars onto Cain, who later sells them on. After managing to sell Declan's car Ross gives part of his share to Cain in order for Moira to keep the farm. Ross leaves the village while Cain goes to pay Declan. Realizing Cain stole the cars, Declan initially refuses to take the money however after Megan states how desperate they are for money, Declan takes the money and Moira is able to keep the farm.
2014-2016: Marriage to Moira Barton[]
Cain marries Moira
The couple get engaged and, with assistance from Chas in wedding preparations, Cain and Moira set a date for 15th May 2014. They get married successfully, although James gets drunk at their reception. Charity gets married the same day to Declan, although Cain tried to convince her not to go through with it as he believed she was doing it for the wrong reasons.
In August 2014, Cain's nephew Aaron returned to the village after 2 years away to help Adam who was supposed to be a lookout on a dodgy job for Ross Barton and Donna Windsor. Cain keeps Aaron hidden at the farm until Aaron decides to hand himself in because he doesn't want to run anymore. Aaron receives a suspended sentence and is finally able to come home and Adam accepts responsibility for the garage fire in 2012 and is sent to prison for 4 months.
In December 2014, Cain returns home from a business trip to France with bad pain in his head. He ignores it for a week, at which point he collapses and is found by Charity, who takes him to a hospital. Cain is told he had a brain aneurysm stemming from his attack in 2011 and needs an operation immediately but leaves the hospital without having had the operation. Returning to the village, he walks by the river but falls in after a dizzy spell. He is found by Vanessa Woodfield and Kirin Kotecha while they were out walking. Eventually, Cain recovers from his condition but is aware that the aneurysm will still exist inside his brain. Cain saves his half-sister, Belle Dingle after she tries to kill herself, and she is diagnosed with possibly schizophrenia, following recent events which led to the teenager killing her best friend a year previously. Since Belle's diagnosis, Cain was supportive of his sister.
In June 2015, Cain and Moira discover that Charity was pregnant when she was sentenced to prison and the baby, Moses Dingle, could possibly be Cain's. Cain visits Charity in prison and questions if he is the father of her child. It is later revealed that Ross Barton is Moses's father, following a one-night stand with Charity. Cain soon finds out that Ross and Debbie have been having an affair and to stop Debbie from running away with Ross, he tells her that Ross is Moses's father. Debbie's wedding day approaches and Cain threatens Ross and warns him to leave Debbie alone. Debbie marries Ross’s brother Pete Barton, but her affair with Ross is discovered on a recorded confession which Ross made on his mobile phone during a conversation with Debbie. Just as everyone finds out, a helicopter comes crashing through the roof of the Village Hall, leaving everyone's lives at risk. Cain and Pete carry Debbie out of the Village Hall, as she is discovered under some debris and therefore begins to fight for her life, due to serious injuries following the crash. But, Cain realises that Kyle is trapped in the debris, and goes in to rescue him, but Kyle hides from him. Cain manages to convince him to come out. Kyle eventually comes out, and Cain rescues him, just before the entire village hall collapses.
In October 2015, Cain was stopped in his tracks by Zak when he tried to kill Robert Sugden in his hospital bed who had recently been shot for which Aaron had got the blame and was in prison awaiting trial. Zak appeals to his son and tells him he is a good man and that he will find another way to help Aaron. Robert eventually regains consciousness and having learnt the truth about the shooting from his brother Andy, gets Aaron released. Also during this time, Cain supports Chas (who witnessed Robert's shooting and is suffering from PTSD as a result).
In February 2016, Cain was devastated to learn that Aaron was raped by his father, Gordon Livesy when he was a child. After Chas told him about Aaron's abuse, Cain drove to Gordon's house, planning revenge on Gordon for what he did to Aaron. The next day, Cain goes to Gordon's house, writes “paedo" on the wall and punches Gordon when he returns. Cain ties him up and forces Gordon to drink vodka and take Chas' sleeping pills to make it look like he was trying to take his own life. Gordon riles Cain up so much that he picks up a chair intending to beat Gordon with it, but Aaron and Chas arrive in the nick of time to stop him. Aaron informs Cain that he wants to deal with this his way by calling the police on his father. As Aaron is giving his statement, Cain, instructed by Chas, has told the rest of the Dingles, Moira, Paddy and Adam about Aaron. When he is being questioned, Gordon tells the police that Cain tried to make him take his own life. The police arrive at Butlers to question Cain, but Chas and Moira give him an alibi.
Despite Cain's newfound role as protector of the Dingle name, due to Zak's ex-communication, Chas criticises him, citing that he hasn't bothered even glancing at Aaron since finding out he was abused and is ashamed of him. Cain tells her that this is utter rubbish and that he still loves Aaron, the problem being that whenever he looks at him, it reminds him "of what a sick, perverted man Gordon is". Alongside this newfound fatherly duty, Cain also tries to protect Debbie from long term lover (and Moira's nephew) Ross after she leaves the village and he will stop at no lengths to get in contact with her. Cain also supports Lisa as she celebrates turning 60 by divorcing Zak. However, Cain later tries being civil with his estranged father due to his troubles with Chas. Cain was in the pub when Chas accidentally reveals to everybody in the pub that Gordon abused Aaron when he was a child. After the police tell Aaron that they can't get Sandra to back Aaron up, Cain goes to the scrapyard and finds Aaron taking his frustrations out on a car. Cain tells Aaron that he loves him and wants to see Gordon face justice but not at the cost of what it is doing to Aaron, so persuades him to drop the case. Back at the Woolpack Cain is present when the police tell Aaron that another of Gordon's victims has come forward.
In April 2016, Gordon stands trial for his crimes. Cain supports Aaron and Chas through the court case which sees Gordon found guilty and sentenced to 18 years in prison. A few weeks later, Cain celebrates with the rest of the family when Aaron receives his deed poll letter confirming him an official Dingle. However, the party is interrupted by the arrival of DS Wise who informs Aaron and Liv that Gordon was found dead in his cell. Cain initially believes Robert had him killed due to his money and connections but they are informed that Gordon took his own life.
In May, Cain and the rest of the Dingles discovered that Belle was dating a married, older man and Cain demanded that she end it. After seeing her speaking with Rakesh Kotecha, Cain assumes that he is her boyfriend, so he hits him over the head with a piece of wood and locks him in a barn. He interrogated him about the relationship but Rakesh has no idea what he is talking about and Belle tells him that Rakesh isn’t her boyfriend, so Cain lets him go. InJune 2016, Cain, while in The Woolpack, sees photos from Lachlan White's spy machine that show doctor Jermaine Bailey has been having an affair with Cain Belle. Lachlan sent the photos to Cain's phone and Cain breaks into Jermaine's office at the GP surgery and shows the photo to Angie who is Jermaine's wife. Belle starts a massive row, but Angie threatens them to get out or she was going to phone the police. Cain then goes after Jermaine and beats him so bad that he ends up in hospital.
2016-2017: Passionate affair with Charity Dingle[]
In July 2016, after Holly relapses and becomes addicted to drugs again Moira confronts her drug dealer but falls onto a used needle causing her to believe she has contracted HIV. With Moira's help, Holly becomes clean, however, Cain is disgusted when he finds out Holly caused Moira to become contracted with HIV after he finds Moira's tablets, so he leaves. Cain tried to run James off the road the day after he walked out on Moira and later snogged Charity at The Woolpack. Then he moved in with Lisa and Belle at Wishing Well Cottage and Moira ordered a divorce. Cain saved Charity's life when she tried to find Belle after she went missing following a mental breakdown and she ended up with broken ribs after a run-in with Holly's ex-boyfriend/drug dealer Dean. Then back at the garage Cain and Charity kissed then slept together. The following day Cain stood up for Charity in front of Zak and Lisa then called Charity back to the garage where he pulled her in for a kiss and they then had sex. The day after that Cain said that was another one-off and Charity quoted 'You'll be sending me dirty emojis before the days out'. They had sex again in a car but Holly knocked on the garage door, though Cain got rid of her. After fetching them some drinks, Charity joked 'Same time tomorrow?'
In September 2016, Holly tentatively approached Cain and implored him to try and make things work with Moira but he told her to mind her own business. The next day, Cain was devastated when Adam informed him that Holly had been found dead in her bed from a heroin overdose. He went to Butlers and comforted a heartbroken Moira. Two weeks later, Holly's funeral took place. Cain watched from a distance and then later visited Holly's grave alone where he succumbed to his grief and cried for his stepdaughter.
Cain changes his mind about going
In October 2016, Cain and Charity decided to start a new life together in France with Debbie. They made their goodbyes to the family but while on the road, Cain suddenly realised he couldn't go through with it. He told a distraught and heartbroken Charity that he loves Moira and gave her the keys to his car and headed back to the village alone. Cain went to Butlers and told Moira that he wants to be with her and he will do everything he can to make it right with her. In December 2016, Cain takes the blame when Moira accidentally knocks Pete down after a heavy drinking session but is devastated when his ex-wife admits to having a one-night stand with him. After an intense and bitter row, Moira tells Cain she needs him and they sleep together.
In January 2017, Cain grows frustrated with Kyle and almost hits him. He is ashamed of his actions as it reminds him of how Shadrach used to treat him when he was younger. He tells Zak, Lisa and Kerry to look after Kyle, believing he's better off without him. Cain is shocked when Debbie returns from France after going on the run from her boss, Hugo. Two of his henchmen turn up and kidnap Jack and Sarah, demanding the money she stole. With the help of Ross and Charity, they get the money and the children are safely returned. Cain is later devastated when Debbie reveals Sarah has cancer. The Dingles are shocked when Lisa tells them that Joanie suffered a fatal heart attack after being released from prison. Cain is the one who breaks the news to Kyle and sets about mending his relationship with his young son. In February, Cain is shocked and angry when his estranged mother Faith turns up in the village but soon softens when she claims to have donated the anonymous £20,000 to Sarah's fundraiser and offers to pay for her lodgings at the B&B despite Chas' disapproval. Cain is upset when Kerry informs him that because of Faith's interference, Kyle has been taken into care. However, Zak and Lisa soon speak to the social worker and Cain is delighted when his son is returned to him.
2017-2018: Relationship with Harriet Finch and reuniting with Moira[]
Cain and Harriet
In March 2017, he falls for vicar Harriet Finch after she catches him stashing stolen phones in her church. She threatens to turn him in to the police, however, she then ends up helping him by lying to the police and helping him drive away from a crime scene. The pair then end up kissing passionately in the church, though Harriet soon regretted it. However, after catching him a second time, Harriet then calls the police, but Cain threatened to tell them that she was also involved in it. Terrified, Harriet goes to turn herself in but Cain stops her. He tells her he'd never do anything that like to her and that he's grateful she helped him. They then kiss passionately and end up sleeping together. This was the start of a sneaky and dangerous affair.
In June 2017, Cain and Harriet's affair was then made public and turned into a proper relationship after Harriet was stabbed and left fighting for her life, making Cain realise how deeply he felt for her. Cain helped her through her recovery process. In July 2017, Cain and Harriet are nearly caught having sex by the bishop after Debbie Dingle dobbed him and Harriet in. Cain tries to disguise himself as a Catholic priest. However, when the bishop started slagging him off to Harriet, Cain couldn't help but lose it and revealing his true identity. He and Harriet then confront Debbie about it, she confesses and then starts bickering with Cain and Harriet.
The DNA test reveals Cain is Isaac's father
In early October, Moira Dingle unexpectedly gives birth to Cains' son Isaac Dingle, leaving his relationship with Harriet on the rocks. Originally they are not sure who the father is but after Moira takes a DNA test she reveals Cain is his father. After a lot of thought, Harriet declares her love for Cain and selflessly tells him to be a family with Moira and his son. She leaves before Cain can say anything. A few weeks later, Cain overhears that Harriet is planning to move to Oxford to a brand new parish and so Cain and Moira can be together. He is shocked by the news and confronts Harriet, telling her he doesn't want her to go before passionately kissing her. Before the moment got too heated, Harriet pulled away and walked off.
In November, Harriet returns from Oxford and is greeted by Cain, who seems to think the pair are still together. Harriet has to remind him there is no 'us' anymore and that's why she left. Cain follows Harriet into the church where he tells Harriet he still thinks there's a future for them. Harriet is quick to shrug him off, but he demands it isn't Moira he needs, it's her. Harriet is taken aback but tells him he can't say that, before walking into the vestry. Cain follows her in and starts questioning her, she tries to ignore him but he grabs her and pulls her in for another passionate kiss. Both Cain and Harriet are taken away in the moment. Harriet reminds Cain she went away because he and Moira belong together and he's quick to respond, telling her that he belongs with her now. Harriet once again shrugs Cain off, he gets angry and storms off, leaving Harriet conflicted. A couple of days later, Harriet goes to visit Cain who is taking care of Isaac. She tells him she's worried about him as no one is looking out for him and people are only concerned about Moira. She declares that she still cares about him as a friend, which prompts Cain to snap at her. Harriet is hurt and angry, and storms off. She walks back into the pub a few hours later and Cain is quick to rush over to her. He apologizes, and when Harriet says if they can be mates, he tells her that isn't what he's thinking and kisses her. The pair are back on.
Harriet soon becomes jealous of the amount of time Cain has been spending with Moira. Their relationship hit a rocky patch over the Christmas period, as Harriet also found out it was Moira who killed Emma and that Cain has been lying to her. On 16th January 2018, Cain tells Moira he's a better man because of her and declares she's a beautiful, perfect, impossible woman and he loves her. Moira leans in for a kiss and soon she and Cain are getting passionate on the sofa. They spend the night together but the next morning Moira dismisses it as the heat of the moment. Cain tells Harriet he's finishing with her and she questions why but know it's to do with Moira. Furious Harriet blames Moira for her throwing away her life. Cain reminds Harriet that Moira did nothing to her, it was him who asked her to lie. Harriet accuses Cain of using her to protect Moira. Cain insists she's talking rubbish and spells it out to her that he doesn't love her like he loves Moira. Harriet is devastated Cain would give up what they had on the off chance of getting back with Moira. Putting on a brave face, Harriet labels Cain a "spineless, useless joke" before storming out but when she gets outside, she breaks down in tears.
Cain and Moira reunite
In February 2018 Cain informs Moira that he and Harriet are over but she is apprehensive towards giving their relationship another shot. Cain helps redecorate Holly's old room, to make it a nursery for Isaac and while there, Moira overhears Faith telling Cain he belongs at the farm with Moira and his sons. However, Moira decides she's leaving the farm and leaving the village as she can't raise Isaac around all of the ghosts. Cain realises and is devastated. Cain returns to the farm where he begs Moira not to go, although Moira reiterates she can't be here right now. Cain informs Moira he'll be at the footbridge at 5pm - if she isn't there, he'll know she doesn't feel the same way about him as he does her. Moira tells him she won't be there so this is goodbye. Cain walks out. However, Charity manages to talk Moira out of leaving and Cain waits on the bridge as the church bells strike five o'clock. Moira appears a minute late. She tells Cain she loves him and they kiss.

2019-2020: Presumed death of Joe Tate and long-lost son[]
Cain is thought to have killed Joe
In 2018, Debbie began a relationship with the newly returned, Joe Tate. Cain disapproves of the relationship, because of his previous issues with the Tates and because of Joe lying about who he was and trying to knock down the Dingle family home. Debbie soon convinced him to give Joe another chance but he remained wary of him. In October 2018, Cain storms up to Joe and punches him to the ground after he learns he has left his daughter, Debbie at the altar. Joe hits his head on a rock and is knocked unconscious. Joe lays unconscious with blood dripping from his nose. Joe’s employee, Graham Foster, checks for a pulse but can't find one. He tells Cain that Joe is dead although Cain thinks it's a sick joke. Cain is in disbelief and he reminds him that he only punched Joe once, but Graham states that once is all it takes. He orders Cain to get in his car and drive towards Hotten to create an alibi. Cain can't understand why Graham is doing this and Graham comments that it saved him a job. Later, Cain returns to Butlers Farm in a state. He struggles to digest what he's done and rejects a call from Debbie. A solemn Cain sits with Isaac as someone knocks at the door. Cain eventually answers the door to see Graham and says he wants to talk. Debbie heads back to the hospital and explains to an upset Sarah that Joe is gone. After putting Isaac down, Cain asks Graham if he's taken care of this properly, as he can't have any of this come back on him. Graham states he said he'd take care of things and he meant it so he'll just have to trust him. Cain wants to know where Joe is but Graham suggests it's best he doesn't know. Cain grabs Graham by the lapels but Graham isn't intimidated so Cain lets him go then signals for him to leave. Cain then descends into a depression as he copes with the fact he is now a murderer.
In January 2019, Debbie believed she might be pregnant with Joe’s child and a guilty Cain told Debbie that he killed Joe, which caused a breakdown in their relationship despite the fact that Debbie wasn’t pregnant. On 14th March 2019, Graham and Kim Tate flag Cain down as he passes her after they break down. At first, Cain helps Kim, but the two end up in an argument after he learns who she is. When Graham informs Kim that Cain killed Joe, having falsely claimed to have done the job himself, Kim plans to implicate Cain for Joe's murder. Kim tries to get Cain on her side, but he refuses. Cain goes looking for him and after hearing his phone ring, underneath the soil, he fears that Kim has killed him and begins to dig, only to be caught by the police. Kim then threatens to get Cain imprisoned for Joe's murder if she doesn't do what she wants. Kim finally tells Cain that Joe isn't dead and tries blackmailing him into bed in exchange for her telling the police. Afterwards, Cain chases after Graham and fights him in a field until Moira runs in and breaks it up. Cain agrees to sleep with Kim but bails out at the last minute, enraging Kim. Debbie slaps Kim once she learns the truth about Joe and Cain assumed that the news would make Debbie forgive him but she remained hostile towards him as she was still upset at how he had handled things.
In May 2019, Cain supported his sister, Belle after Lisa passed away shortly after returning to the village from Scotland. Following Lisa's funeral, the family got personal letters from her which inspired Debbie and Cain to make up. However, in July, Cain disappears without and explanation upsetting Moira who tells him he can't just leave his sons. He then reveals he left as he found out Lisa had left a garage for Belle and Debbie in Scotland and had gone to try and sell it behind their backs, as they both belonged in the village and he didn't want to risk losing them. However, the new farmhand Nate Robinson, who disliked Cain, overheard and informed Debbie of what her father had been up to. Debbie was mad at her father but the two soon made up as Cain realised he couldn’t make these decisions for her. Later, Cain was angered when Debbie informed him that she had decided, after some encouragement from Sarah, to move to the garage in Scottland with Jack. He was upset but came to the conclusion that he would rather have her far away than living down the road, not speaking to him. On 13th August, Cain sees her off as Debbie leaves the village. In late August, Cain went on a long visit to Scotland to help Debbie, unknowingly giving Moira the perfect opportunity to pursue her recently started affair with Nate.
Cain returns in late September 2019, and confronts Moira on her recent behaviour, as he starts noticing that something isn't right. She doesn't open up but Cain reassures her that he will find out. He grows more and more suspicious of Moira's behaviour. Faith later becomes involved and is convinced that Moira is having an affair with Pete, and tells Cain that who is furious. On 21st October, Cain manages to lure Pete up to Butlers and knocks him unconscious, then he tied him up to get his revenge. Knowing that Cain wasn't going to back down without any answers, Pete finally exposes Moira and Nate's affair which shocks Cain. Afterwards, Cain sets out for a day he will never forget as he plans his vengeance on Nate.
Cain and Nate show-down
The following day, Cain lures Moira and Nate into his car and takes them out on a boat. The meaning behind Cain's boat trip comes to Nate when Cain admits he knows Moira's sleeping with somebody else. Cain pushes Nate too far beating around the bush, forcing him to come clean and brag about sleeping with Moira on many different occasions which leads to Cain hitting him with a spanner. Moira suddenly hears a loud bang from inside the boat and discovers Nate lying unconscious. Moira realises she has been caught out and that Cain knows about her and Nate as he forces her to come clean to him. She assures Cain that everything with Nate was physical with no emotion but he’s rattled at her actions. Then Nate suddenly regains consciousness and furiously attacks Cain. They get into a fight and Nate's intensions with Moira become clear once he unexpectedly calls Cain "dad". Nate reveals he is Cain's long lost son from a previous relationship, hellbent on making Cain's life a misery as he did to him when he abandoned him.
Suddenly, an explosion goes off on the boat, caused by the paraffin brought on board for the stove, but they all make it off in one piece. Cain saves Moira from drowning, the goes to look for Nate but is unable to find him. He later visits Nate in hospital where he reveals that he did what he did to get revenge on Cain for abandoning him and his mum, Cara Robinson. However, Cain is adamant that he never knew she was pregnant and that she never tried to contact him which confuses Nate. Then Faith arrives and reveals that Shadrach who was racist and wouldn't accept his son having a child with a black woman, so he sent out several threats to Cara and because of this, Faith was the one responsible for driving Cara away in an attempt to protect them all from Shadrch's wrath. Faith asks the pair to move forward, but Cain’s overwhelmed with the news and tells Nate to stay away from him and his family. Cain then turns his back on Nate, disowns Faith and publicly exposed Nate's true identity as well as his affair with Moira. Shortly after, Faith leaves the village as her son rejects her.
Cain refuses to forgive Nate and Moira and stops Moira from seeing the kids. Nate tries to make amends, wanting to get to know Cain, as well as the rest of his new family, but Cain wants nothing to do with him. Cain gets upset when he finds Nate at Wishing Well Cottage with the rest of his family and tells them they have to choose, forcing them to freeze out Nate as well. After his break with Moira, Cain returns to his criminal endeavours and works with Aaron stealing cars. However, they steal from a thug called Sean and are threatened into returning the vehicles, but worry as they have already sold them. To get revenge, Sean kidnaps Moses Dingle after seeing him with Cain and threatens to hurt him unless Cain returns the cars but he is unable to. Charity is furious with Cain for endangering her son, but she gets Moses back safely after he is found by Nate.
On Christmas Day, Cain was upset to see Belle had invited Nate over again, trying to insist that Nate was family and told him that he should forgive him as he had made much worse things in his past but was still forgiven. Cain gave in and told Nate he would not stop the rest of the family from getting to know him but said he should not talk to him.
Cain and Cara talk about their past
In January 2020, Cain came face-to-face with Cara for the first time since they were teenagers after she was called by Moira who wanted to get rid of Nate. Her plan backfired when Nate refused to go with Cara, wanting to get to know his new family and told Cara to leave. Moira realised she had an alcohol problem and told Cain she was going to stay with Nana Barton for a while and sort herself out. When she returned the following month, she begged Cain to give their relationship another go but he presented her with divorce papers on Valentine’s Day, which she surprised him by signing.
On 20th February 2020, Cain worried about Moira after hearing from Nate that there had been rustlers up at the farms and they were starting to get violent. Armed with a gun he had gotten from Harriet, which she wanted him to get rid of for her boyfriend Will Taylor, Cain went into the barn and shot into the dark, believing Moira was in danger. However, he was horrified when he realised he had accidentally shot Nate who was in a critical condition. Moira covered for Cain, telling the police rustlers had shot Nate, but Cara didn't believe them and vowed to get the truth. Cain felt awful about shooting his own son and visited him in hospital the following day. Nate backed up Cain and Moira's story, saying he owed them that after everything he'd done. Cain was grateful for this and he and Nate finally began to bond. Cara and Cain also decided to put their differences aside for Nate's sake.
2020 to 2022: DI Malone, reuniting with Moira, feud with Al and Faith’s death[]
In March 2020, Cain got himself involved with bent copper DI Malone, after it turned out Will's gun actually belonged to his old gang which was secretly led by Malone. Cain found out Malone had threatened Will to start working for him again and told him to back off which had the opposite effect, turning Malone's attention towards him and forcing him to work for him as well, or else he would arrest Cain for shooting Nate. Cain still tried to resist working for Malone, so Malone killed one of Moira’s bulls to prove his threats were real. Cain was then at Malone’s beck and call for weeks, along with Will and Billy Fletcher. When Malone asked Cain and Billy to dispose of a blood covered car, Cain saw an opportunity and kept the car to blackmail Malone with. However, Billy soon tells Will that Cain didn’t get rid of the car and so Will steals it. After he finds out about this, Cain confronts Will for destroying their only leverage over Malone but Will says he had no choice.
In May, Malone told Cain and the others he had one last job for them, which would make them even. Cain was once again reluctant to do what Malone asked, but felt he had no other choice. He and Billy went to collect the drugs, but were surprised to find Will wasn’t coming. Will had found out that Malone was setting Cain and Billy up and managed to warn them. Malone was angry when he stopped Cain and Billy but didn’t find the drugs, so he had them both beaten up. After this, Cain was adamant he wouldn’t work for Malone again and Will promised to take care of it. Unbeknownst to Cain, Malone was eventually dealt with by Will’s daughter, Dawn Taylor, who shot him dead, freeing Cain from his wrath. Cain was still concerned about Malone’s previous threats, but Harriet and Will assured him it was dealt with.
In July, Cain finds out that Moira was the victim of a hit and run and became concerned for her. He went to the hospital and told a sleeping Moira that he didn’t know what he would do if he lost her, unaware she was awake and heard him. In September 2020, Cain learns that it was Jamie Tate who was behind the hit and run on Moira from Jamie’s estranged wife, Andrea. Cain attacks him with a baseball bat but is stopped by Belle, who was dating Jamie, when she reveals that she already reported him to the police. Jamie then sets up Belle and Nate to take the fall for the crime with help from his mother, Kim. Cain is furious, but the family remind him that all that will happen if he hurts Jamie is he will be in prison as well.
On 29th October, Cain is kidnapped and locked in the boot of a car by Mackenzie Boyd, Moira’s estranged brother. Mack threatens Cain to get to Moira, and leaves him in the boot to go talk to her. Cain escapes the car and follows Mack to Butlers. He bursts in and attacks Mack, beating him harshly before Moira says that he’s her brother. Cain is shocked to discover this and Moira explains she hasn’t seen him since she was eighteen. Cain then storms out, telling them both to leave him out of their family drama. In November, Cain has to support Belle as the stress of the investigation causes her to have a mental breakdown. Nate then confesses to being wholly responsible for the hit and run, sparing Belle from prison. Cain is touched by Nate’s sacrifice and becomes closer to his son.
In late November, Cain and Moira are locked in a barn by Mackenzie after they try to stop one of his schemes. They have a long talk, during which Moira tells him she heard what he said to her after the hit and run but Cain dismisses this as being out of concern for their kids not himself. She says she loves him, then asks him to tell her that he doesn’t love her and Cain looks away silently, unable to say it. After a while, Moira tells him that if this is the end of them then she is going to move away, which shocks Cain but he doesn’t have time to respond before Mack lets them out. That evening, he goes back to the farm and tells Moira he loves her, then kisses her. They sleep together, however, he leaves without saying goodbye the next morning and Moira confronts him, asking what last night meant. Cain tells her that it meant he forgave her and they finally reunite, agreeing to give their relationship another try.
In January 2021, Debbie returns to deal with Sarah’s wild behaviour. A short while later, Cain discovers that shes been sleeping with local dodgy businessman, Al Chapman. Cain is furious about this as he believes that Al only used Debbie, as he was also engaged to Priya. Cain confronted Al as he was leaving after both women dumped him, and the two nearly got into a fight. However Al’s son, Ellis arrives as Al goads Cain and breaks it up. Then Cain threatens to kill Al if he returns to the village but Al makes it clear he isn’t scared of Cain. Debbie returned to Scotland a few weeks later, and Cain blamed Al for her leaving.
On 20th January, Cain finds out that Mackenzie is trying to sabotage the garage by stealing cars from him. To catch him out, Cain and Aaron cut the brakes on Eric Pollard’s car the next day and leave it out in the open. However, Eric takes the car himself to drive Tracy Metcalf, who is pregnant with Nate’s child, to hospital. Eric crashes the car and both he and Tracy are taken to hospital. When Cain finds out he is horrified, and rushes to the hospital to check on them. Fortunately, neither of them were hurt and Cain puts aside his revenge on Mack.
In February 2021, Al did return to the village, despite Cain’s threats. The rest of the family told him to leave Al alone, as they didn’t want Cain getting in any trouble with the law and he reluctantly agrees. On 25th February, Cain becomes a grandfather again when Nate’s daughter Frankie Robinson is born. That day, Moira finds Faith has returned after seeing her in a stolen hearse. Cain is not happy to see his mother and refuses to have anything to do with her, though Chas eventually talks him into being civil to her. In May, Nate asks Cain to be Frankie’s godfather and he accepts. Cain attends Frankie’s christening on 13th May and is pronounced godfather and Leyla Harding is made godmother. Cain is irritated by his mother’s antics on the day, especially her bickering with Tracy.
Cain is approached by Marlon a few months later, telling Cain that Al is scamming Chas for shares in the pub. This leads to Cain kidnapping Al and holding him captive in a barn. He threatens Al but once again Al taunts him, telling him to do his worst. Just as Cain is about to attack Al, he is stopped by Chas. She unties Al and he leaves after one throwing one more insult at Cain. After Al leaves, Chas tells Cain she knows what she is doing and to let her handle her own business. Cain keeps his promise to Chas, so for the next few months Cain and Al do nothing more than throw jibes at one another.
On 22nd July, Faith tells Cain, Chas and Moira that her cancer may have returned. Cain is shocked by this news and storms off. Over the next few days, he refuses to deal with his emotions and ignores his mother. Chas and Moira try to talk him round but he stays away as Faith has her tests. Eventually, Moira convinces him to see Faith after telling him she regrets not getting to see her mother before she died. Cain listens and goes to Faith, promising to be a better son. On the 3rd August, Faith’s test results reveal that she hasn’t got cancer but her symptoms were caused by rheumatoid arthritis. Cain is hugely relieved by this news but refuses to show it. In late August, it is revealed that Tracy has been suffering with post-natal depression and she is admitted to hospital for treatment. Cain tries to support Nate as he deals with this over the next few months.
On December 30th 2021, Cain’s son Kyle goes missing along with Belle. Cain frantically searches for them and the next day he finds out they were trapped in a car in the woods all night. They are rescued, but Cain is informed they both have hypothermia and Kyle might not survive. Cain is devastated as he waits for news of his son, but this soon turns to anger when he finds out Belle tried to call Al for help but he ignored it. Soon it becomes clear that both Belle and Kyle will make full recoveries, much to Cain’s relief, but he still plot his revenge on Al.
2022 - 2023: Feud with Al and Caleb’s arrival[]
On 4th January 2022, Cain kidnaps Al’s son, Ellis Chapman and leaves him in the middle of nowhere with no warm clothing or way back. Al is furious and confronts Cain, demanding to know where his son is. Cain eventually tells Al, after taunting him for a while and Al saves Ellis. This leads to a break in the feud as both men see the toll it takes on their families. Cain is saddened when Tracy takes his granddaughter to Nottingham after Nate cheated on her.
In May, Cain finds out that Faith slept with his employee, Dan Spencer and is disgusted with her behaviour, driving them further apart as Faith continues on her downward spiral. On 10th May, Charity tells Cain that her son, Noah has been stalking Chloe Harris and has run away with the evidence. Cain searches for Noah and finds him at the Cricket Pavilion being threatened by Al, so Cain tells Al to leave Noah alone. Al says he won’t leave without the laptop with the evidence on it, but Cain steps in front of Noah and tells Al he will have to go through him first. Al reluctantly backs off, leaving Noah and Cain alone. Noah tries to thank Cain but he tells him to get back home, as he is also unhappy with Noah’s actions toward Chloe. A couple of days later, Cain is involved in a car accident as he chases Al to stop him from taking the laptop to the police station. When Noah is later arrested and charged after Charity reports him, Cain tries to talk Noah into forgiving his mother but he is determined not to. In June 2022, Cain is present when Noah is sentenced to three months in prison.
Cain is shocked when, on 16th June, Faith announces that her cancer has returned and is incurable. Cain refuses to be there for his mother and then Cain finds out that his friend, local doctor, Liam Cavanagh knew about the cancer. He lashes out and pushes Liam to the ground but doesn’t do anything more. He later apologised to Liam, explaining that he doesn’t know how to handle something like this. After speaking with Moira, Cain agrees to support Faith but still struggles to bond with her. The next month, Faith stops having chemo, much to Cain’s disappointment as he sees this as her giving up. The next day, Cain and Faith finally make peace and he agrees to truly be there for her. Then in August, it turns out that Faith’s cancer has spread to her brain, so it will begin to affect her memory and Faith is devastated. A few weeks later, Faith attacks Cain with a frying pan in the Woolpack’s back room after mistaking him for Shadrach. Cain is shocked but manages to calm Faith down as she screams at him. He later confides in Moira that he now realises how afraid Faith was when living with Shadrach and he understands why she left.
Realising that Faith doesn’t have long left, Cain and the rest of the family try to make Faith happy. On 12th October, Cain attends a beach party thrown by the Dingles for Faith instead of trip to Whitby. He dances with Faith and she says it has been the perfect day as they have finally put all their problems to rest. However, Cain is unable to tell Faith he loves her and so leaves abruptly, upsetting Faith. The next day Cain finds Faith in her bedroom at the Woolpack, having taken an overdose of pills to end her life. He initially tries to call an ambulance but Faith refuses to let him. Seeing that this is what she wants, Cain talks with Faith as she passes away and he finally tells her he loves her. Faith then dies in Cain’s arms and he cries over her. He calls Liam to come and record the death before telling Chas. The next day, Cain finds out that Moira knew Faith was planning to end her life and berated her for keeping it a secret, but she argued that it wasn’t her secret to tell. Cain then tells Chas the truth about how Faith died and she lashes out at him for keeping it from her but he says he only did it to protect her. On 28th October, Faith is buried in a joint funeral service with Liv Dingle, who died shortly after her. Cain leads the procession and gives a eulogy to his mother.
After the service, Cain finds Chas’s burner phone and answers a call from Al. Cain finds out that Al and Chas have been having an affair and plan to run away together. Unable to let his rival end his sister’s marriage, Cain texts Al from the burner phone to meet in a barn at Butlers and Al arrives to find Cain waiting with a shotgun in hand. Al taunts Cain about how he needs a gun to face him, so Cain puts the gun down and says he wants to settle things once and for all. They start to fight and Al briefly gets the upper hand, so Cain reaches for the shotgun. However, Cain didn’t know that Kyle had snuck into the barn and grabbed the gun. Kyle shot Al dead to protect his father, leaving Cain horrified at what happened. He quickly takes Kyle back to the farmhouse but is seen by Kerry Wyatt, Al’s girlfriend when he returns to dispose of the evidence. She called the police and when they arrive, Cain turns himself in for the crime. Moira is furious at Cain for destroying their family over a stupid vendetta and tells him she won’t wait for him.
On 4th November, Cain pleads guilty to murdering Al, to Moira’s anger. When she visits him later he is forced to tell her that Kyle killed Al. A few days later, Moira visits again and tells Cain that Amy took Kyle and ran away after he told her the truth, which Cain is angered by but he can’t do anything about it from prison. On 22nd November, Chas visits Cain and he tells her he knows about the affair but he is keeping quiet for her husband, Paddy’s sake. She confesses that she misses Al and so Cain berates her for throwing her family away, then disowns her. Cain spends the next few weeks in prison as everyone else finds out the truth about what happened.
On 25th December 2022, Cain is visited by his estranged brother, Caleb Miligan. Caleb tells him he tracked him down after seeing the story about Al in the news. He also reveals that he knows Faith was alive when he visited Cain thirty years earlier and blames Cain for keeping him away. Cain is unapologetic and he tells him to stay away from his family. Later, Moira visits and Cain tells her the story of how he met Caleb. She is shocked by this, telling him he was wrong to keep Caleb away and that he was cruel to force Faith to choose between her sons. A couple of days later, Kyle confesses that he killed Al, with some help from Caleb. Cain tries to convince the police he is lying and Moira suggests that Caleb could be able to help, but Cain reiterates that Caleb is not to be trusted.
On 12th January, the police charge Kyle with killing Al, so Cain is released from prison and Kyle is taken into a young offenders facility. Cain immediately tries to force Caleb out of the village but Moira and Amy want him to stay, as he is paying for Kyle’s lawyer. Amy then tells Cain that as soon as the trial is over, she will be going for full custody as she blames Cain for her son becoming a murderer and Cain promises he will fight her for custody because he is Kyle’s dad. Later, Kyle calls from the secure home and tells Cain that he is scared, leaving Cain feeling even worse as he confesses to Moira that he blames himself for Kyle being in prison. On 19th January, everyone is relieved when Kyle is released on bail, but Amy insists on taking him home with her, against Cain’s wishes. Moira convinces Cain to let it go for now, for Kyle’s sake but Cain warns Amy he will get his son back.
Meanwhile, Chas and Cain continue to clash as she grows closer to Caleb and tells Cain to get to know him. When Cain finds a toy car Caleb bought Kyle for Christmas and notices it is the same make of car as the one Caleb stole when they first met, he tells Moira that this is a message from Caleb that he still wants revenge. A few days later, Caleb goes to the garage to talk to Cain but Cain angrily threatens him with a spanner. He eventually accepts his Caleb invitation to go for a meal with him but Caleb then drives them out to a country road and Cain becomes increasingly frustrated by his brother’s vague answers to his questions. Cain ends up grabbing Caleb and demanding to know why he is in the village but Caleb tells Cain the only reason he is there is to get to know his family, so Cain storms off. Then on 2nd February, Cain finds Charity in an emotional state with a bottle of whiskey. She tells him she doesn’t want to talk about it, then steals Caleb’s car and Cain quickly gets in with her as Charity drives them to a graveyard where Mark Bails was buried. After they return to the village, Cain gives to keys to Caleb and he apologises for taking the car.
Cain then starts to form a bond with his brother as they spend more time together and he is relieved when Caleb’s lawyer says he has found a way to get Kyle out of trouble. On 2nd March, a hearing is called which determines that Al’s death was an accident, not murder. Cain and Moira want Kyle to move back in with them after this, but Amy is insistent on going for custody. A few days later, Kyle got in a fight with Carl Holliday, Jimmy King’s son, and pushed Carl into a table. Carl’s stepmother, Nicola King angrily berates Kyle and calls him a killer, causing Cain to angrily threaten Nicola, but she tells him she isn’t scared of him and that it is no wonder Kyle ended up a murderer with a father like him. Cain storms out, leaving Amy to talk Nicola down. Amy confronts him about his behaviour, but he just demands Kyle move back in with him and Moira, where he can take care of him. Amy protests but Cain says he has custody of Kyle and he will sue her. The next day, Kyle moves back into Butlers despite Amy’s objections. Eventually, Moira, and Amy’s boyfriend, Matty talk them into settling their differences for Kyle’s sake.
A few weeks later, Cain and Moira are worried about their financial situation as the farm is losing money. Cain spends more time helping on the farm than at the garage as he tries desperately to keep the farm afloat. They soon have to let Mack and Nate go as they can’t afford to employ them, but Cain gives Mack a job at the garage at Moira’s request. Nate angrily confronts Cain about this as he believes Cain chose Mack over him but Cain tries to explain that Mack is a trained mechanic and it was a favour to Moira. In May, Moira’s tractor stops working and she tells Cain this might be the final nail in the coffin as she considers selling the farm. New clients seem to solve this problem but they cancel the order after finding a metal bolt in their meat delivery and an anonymous source calls the health inspector. After this, Moira tells Cain that she has no choice but to sell the farm and he supports her through it. She then agrees to sell the farm to Kim, which angers Cain as he believes she arranged the inspection to get the farm.
Then in June 2023, Cain is called to Home Farm by Kim, where he learns the truth about Caleb. She reveals that he had been trying to steal from her and had sabotaged Moira’s farm to gain her trust. Caleb starts to explain but a furious Cain knocks him to the ground. Kim then insults Caleb as Cain seethes, but Caleb angrily tells her that he is the son of Frank Tate, Kim’s first husband. Cain and Kim are both surprised by this but soon brush it off as Kim leaves the brothers alone. Caleb tries to reason with Cain as he swears he was going to give Moira her farm back once he had taken Kim down, but Cain doesn’t listen and hits him again. He then leaves Home Farm and informs the family of Caleb’s schemes, which shocks them all.
On 15th June, Cain and the rest of the officially Dingles disown Caleb. When they make this clear to him, he angrily insults everyone in the pub, bringing up Nate’s affair with Moira, Chas sleeping with Al and Cain letting Kyle go to prison. Cain threatens him and later, Caleb is pushed off a ridge in the woods and left to die. He is found by Cain the next morning while he is out walking Zak’s dog, Monty and Cain calls an ambulance. Caleb then lies comatose for the next week as Chas suspects Cain pushed Caleb and accuses him but he denies it. When he refuses to explain why he was out in the woods, Chas takes this as confirmation and he tries to get her to forget about Caleb after everything he did. Eventually, Zak tells Chas that Cain was out walking Monty because Zak was struggling with mobility and couldn’t do it. When Caleb wakes up, he tells the police that it was an accident, but later Cain finds out it was Caleb’s son, Nicky Miligan who pushed him. Cain tries to get Caleb to leave the village but is disappointed as he moves into Mill Cottage and vows to win his family back. Cain warns him to stay away from him as they aren’t brothers anymore.
On 3rd July, Cain and Moira follow Nate into town after he starts acting strangely and see his ex, Tracy heading into the town hall with a man in a suit. They assume Nate is going to try and stop the wedding, so they stop the car and quickly bundle Nate inside. They drive him all the way back to the village and Nate is furious with them as he reveals that he was the one who Tracy was marrying. Cain and Moira are shocked by this and to make amends, they go to vicar, Charles Anderson and ask him to perform the wedding. He agrees to do a blessing, but makes it clear that Nate and Tracy will have to be officially married another time. Cain tells them the news and Nate agrees to the blessing, which Cain and Moira are present at.
On 1st August, Cain is approached by Corey Sanderson, the manager of a local car hire firm. He is offered a contract to fix their fleet of vehicles and gladly accepts, as it would bring a lot of money into the garage. Nate then gets a job with the car hire firm but it is soon revealed that the company is actually owned by Caleb and he offered Cain to contract to get on his good side. Cain was infuriated by this and told Caleb he couldn’t buy him, before ending the business deal. However, Nate continued to work for Caleb, to Cain’s disappointment as he tried to talk him out of it. After Dan Spencer attacks his young daughter Amelia’s stalker, Lloyd, and accidentally kills him, Cain agrees to help him flee the country by sending him to Mystic Dingle in Ireland. Cain reminds him that his daughter and her baby will never have normal lives if they leave, so Dan tells Cain to cancel the plan. Dan asks Cain to watch out for Amelia and Esther while he is in prison and Cain promises he will.
In late August, Nate tells Cain that Corey is using the car hire firm as a front for illegal activities and that Caleb went to meet Corey’s boss. Nate is worried about him and confesses that Caleb is only doing this because he messed up a job. They find Caleb, bloody and beaten on the floor at the office and then take Caleb back to Mill Cottage where they realise that he needs a doctor, so Cain calls Liam, who agrees to help and Cain thanks Caleb for what he did for Nate. A few days later, Cain goes back to check on him and starts spending time with Caleb as they begin to repair their relationship. Later, Caleb makes Cain, Nate and his son Nicky equal partners in Longbrook Private Hire, but Cain is reluctant to accept so Caleb agrees to split his shares between Nate and Nicky.
In October 2023, Cain is concerned as he gets word from Adam Barton that his nephew Aaron is in serious trouble. He then asks Caleb to go to Italy with him to get Aaron, to which Caleb agrees and Cain lies to Moira that they are going to look for cars for the hire company. On 5th October, they take Aaron to Wylies Farm and lock him up in there, but next day, Moira follows Cain to the farm and demands to know what they’re hiding, forcing Cain to let her see Aaron. She tells him that he should let him go, but Cain argues that Aaron is too much of a loose cannon to be set free. Moira then tells Chas about Aaron and she heads Wylies to see her son, despite Cain telling her that Aaron doesn’t want to see her and he comforts Chas after Aaron insults her. A couple of days later, Cain gets a text that shows a picture of Chas in the boot of a car, then gets a phone call from gangster, Harry, demanding the money he and Caleb owe him after he was cut off from using the car hire firm. Cain tells Aaron about this and that he is going to pay Harry with the money Aaron stole in Italy, which infuriates Aaron. Cain and Caleb then go to the meeting place with Aaron’s money and Harry threatens to shoot Chas but they are interrupted when Aaron runs Harry over. Cain and Caleb beat up Harry’s thugs as Aaron takes back his money and then drives off, leaving an annoyed Cain to take Chas to the hospital. Aaron later decides to stay in the village, which is a relief Chas but Cain is worried as he believes Aaron is dangerous.
Shortly after, Cain finds out that Sam’s wife Lydia Dingle was raped by her old friend, Craig Reed and Cain comforts his brother, offering to make Craig pay for what he did, but Sam says Lydia doesn’t want that. A week later, Craig walks into the pub and threatens the Dingle with legal action if they continue to spread the story about the rape and the day after, Craig is found dead on Home Farm land. Lydia gets all the Dingles in the pub to find out if any of them killed him, with Cain and Sam revealing that they did kidnap Craig and try to get him to admit what he did but Lydia made them let him go. However, as Cain and Sam released Craig, he taunted Sam about the rape, to the point that Sam beat Craig badly. Craig then stumbled off and Sam went home, but Cain followed Craig. He saw Kim’s horse kick Craig in the head and convinced Kim not to call an ambulance. The two watched him die and then let the horse go as they agreed to keep quiet. Afterwards, Cain went to Caleb’s flat and asked him for an alibi, which Caleb agreed to do.
When Sam is arrested for attacking Craig, Cain considers coming clean to protect his brother, but soon the coroner concludes that Craig died because of the horse kick, not the beating. Despite this, Lydia moves out and Sam blames Cain, as he is the reason they kidnapped Craig in the first place. Over the next few weeks, Cain struggles with his guilt over what happened to Craig and the state of Sam’s marriage, so he tells Caleb the reason he needed an alibi and Caleb calms him down, reminding him that he didn’t actually kill Craig. Later, Lydia discovers Kim’s involvement in what happened to Craig and Cain worries she knows he was there, but Kim keeps that secret.
2024 to 2025: Moira's tumour, Nate's exit, cheating[]
In 2024, Cain’s problems with Aaron continue as he proves to be very unpredictable. On 11th January, a client’s car is stolen from the garage and Cain is furious. Later, he hears Mack and Aaron talking about it in front of the Woolpack and learns Aaron took it. Cain confronts Aaron about the theft but Aaron is unapologetic as he tells Cain to do his worst. Two weeks later, Cain finds Aaron in the garage and locks them both in, telling him it’s time he learned his lesson. They fight and Cain gets his hands on a tire iron but stops himself from hitting Aaron. He takes a step back but Aaron attacks him again and grabs the tire iron, knocking Cain unconscious with it. The next day, Moira asks Cain what happened as she sees his bruises but he lies to her about it, telling her it was an accident. Later, he goes to the scrapyard and confronts Aaron again but collapses as he tries to throw a punch. He is taken to hospital and Moira is furious with Aaron when she finds out about what happened. Cain worries that he might have another aneurysm but the doctor assured him that was not the case. Soon after, Chas tells the family that she has breast cancer and Cain is devastated. When Aaron reacts coldly to this news, Cain tells him he is a disappointment and compares him to Gordon. Aaron then storms off and Chas says she needs a rest. Later, Cain confesses to Moira that he only treated Aaron the way he did because he was scared he couldn’t stop him.
A couple of days later, Cain and Moira attend a dinner party thrown by Caleb and his wife Ruby alongside Nate and Tracy. The dinner is awkward as an increasingly drunk Ruby insults the Dingles and makes inappropriate jokes about sensitive topics. Cain is annoyed by this and Caleb tries to mediate between them without much success. Eventually, Ruby goes to far as she brings up Moira’s affair with Nate which infuriates Cain. He and Moira end up leaving, closely followed by Nate and Tracy, as Cain’s dislike of Ruby is heightened. Soon, Cain and Aaron start to make amends as Aaron supports Chas through her diagnosis.
On 15th February 2024, Cain attends Belle’s wedding to Tom King and they are all sad that Zak is unable to make it. In the middle of the reception, Ruby stands up and makes a speech announcing that Caleb has been having affair with Nate’s wife, Tracy. Cain has to pull Nate off Caleb as he rages at his uncle and Nate then storms out with Tracy. Afterward, Cain angrily orders Caleb to leave the wedding and the next day, Cain disowns Caleb for what he did to Nate, despite Caleb’s protests. He allows Nate to move into Butlers, but advises him not to keep Tracy away from Frankie as it will only hurt their daughter. A few days later, Chas calls both Cain and Caleb to the Woolpack to tell them that the cancer she has was caused by a hereditary gene, so they both might have passed it onto their children. Cain agrees to get tested, but puts off the appointment. Eventually, Moira and Liam convince him that he is better off knowing and so he has the test. Cain was later given the all-clear, to his relief.
On 5th March, Cain sees Nate and Caleb arguing but intervenes before it gets physical. Nate is furious as he believes that Cain isn’t supporting him and Caleb has gotten away with destroying his marriage. Cain then tells Nate he has a plan and recruits Aaron to help them. The next day, the three of them steal all the cars from the car hire firm, as well as Caleb’s Bentley. This angers Caleb and he confronts his brother but Cain denies it, so Ruby talks Caleb into calling the police on Cain. However, all the vehicles are returned to the car hire firm before the police get there then Cain, Nate and Aaron go to Caleb’s house and deliver the badge from the Bentley, explaining that they had it crushed. Caleb is furious and Cain threatens him to stay away from his family.
In April 2024, Cain becomes more determined to keep Caleb and Ruby away from the Dingles as he says they are toxic. When Ruby swans into the pub and demands to be served during a Dingle gathering, Cain tries to force her to leave but she refuses. When he threatens to make her, Ruby knees him in the groin and Caleb drags her away before Cain can recover. Caleb tries to make up with the Dingles following his bad behaviour and Cain is annoyed as he wants rid of his brother. This is made worse when he and Ruby crash Chas’s party after her mastectomy. Cain tells them to leave but Ruby won’t back down and during an argument, Ruby elbows Chas in the chest. Chas is hurt and Cain supports her, before ordering Caleb and Ruby to leave. It turns out there is no damage but Cain is angry with Caleb and Ruby for disturbing Chas’s recovery, so when an apologetic Ruby delivers air fryers to Chas, Moira and Sam as an apology, Cain is furious. He gathers the air fryers outside Wishing Well and destroys them with a sledgehammer in front of Ruby, who calls him a pathetic bully. After Ruby manipulates Cain and Caleb to get them together in the pub for Caleb’s birthday drinks, he storms out and Caleb follows. He tries to make excuses for Ruby, but Cain says that she isn’t the problem, then explains that for once he wants to be a good father to Nate and support him, which means not letting Caleb back in. Caleb understands and the brothers come to an agreement.
On 1st May, Isaac finds an abandoned lamb while out with Moira. She refuses to let him have it, but Cain secretly gets it for him. Moira is annoyed with Cain for going behind her back, but gives in after seeing how happy Isaac is. Cain then spends time with Isaac and the lamb, who he names Minty. A few days later, Caleb’s son, Nicky is in a car accident and ends up in a coma. Cain supports Caleb and wants to be there for his nephew and goes to the hospital with Moira to see Nicky as he lies unconscious. When it is revealed that Nicky’s friend, Ethan Anderson was the one driving, Cain keeps Caleb from attacking him and Caleb accuses Cain of not caring but he swears revenge for his nephew. On 22nd May, Cain attends the village fete with his family and later that day, Ethan stumbles into the village fete, bloody and injured. His father, Charles, accuses Cain and Caleb of hurting Ethan but both of them deny it.
A couple of days later, Cain and the rest of the village find out that his friend, Liam’s girlfriend, Ella Forster is a murderer. Cain takes Ella to the back room of the pub after everyone turns on her and listens to her story about how she accidentally killed her best friend when she was eleven. He is understanding as his son, Kyle is in a similar position to hers and helps Ella out even though Liam wants her gone, so he confronts Cain about it in the garage. Liam says that he is only doing this because of Kyle, but Cain argues that Liam’s judgment is clouded by his dead daughter, Leanna, causing Liam to pin him to a car. Cain calmly warns him to back off and Liam listens, but is still furious. Later, Cain apologises to Liam for taking Ella’s side and they make up.
In June, Cain’s nephew, Samson Dingle, is stabbed in the HIDE and accuses Moira’s son Matty. Cain believes Matty when he says that he is innocent, which puts him at odds with Sam, who backs his son’s story. He and Matty both try to convince Samson that he should tell the truth, but Samson reports Matty for witness intimidation and he is arrested. A few days later, after talking with Samson, Cain goes home and Moira confronts him about taking Samson’s side. She calls him weak and says the old Cain wouldn’t have hesitated to teach Samson a lesson, taunting him until he punches a door. He squares up to Moira and she compares him to Shadrach as he tries to intimidate her, so Cain storms off. The following morning, Cain feels guilty for having almost hit his wife and he tries to apologise for being so aggressive, but Moira is still angry with him.
When Minty the lamb dies of natural causes in July, Isaac is distraught. Cain and Moira try to comfort him, but he accuses them of killing Minty because they didn’t want him. As they work together to convince Isaac that Minty’s death was an accident, they begin to reconcile their differences. A couple of weeks later, Matty is in hospital after being beaten up and Moira is furious. Later that day, Cain finds out that she and Mackenzie kidnapped Samson and interrogated him, which causes another fight between Cain and Moira. Samson soon confessed to lying about Matty and he is released, to Cain and Moira’s relief. Cain tried to talk to Sam about this in the Woolpack, but Sam was angry that his son was going to prison and ended up punching Cain.
On 22nd July, Charity told Cain that she was worried about Belle’s husband Tom abusing her. Cain was unsure and dismissed her evidence, but still broke into the couple’s home with her to investigate. When they found some cameras and Belle’s phone hidden in a drawer, they decided to drive to Wales where Tom and Belle were on holiday. They found the cottage smashed up and blood on the walls, but Belle nowhere to be found. Cain and Charity soon found Tom and Cain pinned him against a wall, threatening to kill him if he had hurt Belle. Tom told them that he and Belle had argued when he learned she had aborted their baby and she had relapsed mentally then ran away. Cain and Charity were doubtful and returned to the village to look for Belle, finding her at Wishing Well with Lydia. They asked Belle what had happened but she just told them that she had left Tom and reassured Cain that everything was okay.
In August, Cain agreed to help Sam prepare Samson for prison. He attacked Samson and threw him to the ground as he taught him how to fight. The lesson was interrupted by Moira, who was furious with Cain for helping him and a few days later, Samson is arrested for assaulting his partner in crime, Josh Cope, who helped frame Matty. As a result Samson is sentenced to four years in prison and everyone believes Moira reported him, including Cain but soon, it is revealed that Noah Dingle had reported Samson.
A few days later, Cain found out that Mack had stolen John Sugden’s van from the garage and rolled it into a lake. He was furious and ordered Mack to fix it for free, while also giving John a job on the farm. Cain becomes worried about Moira as she is increasingly forgetful and moody over the next few weeks. This turns serious when Moira head butts Ruby for flirting with Cain and when he confronts her about it, Moria is unapologetic and storms off, leaving Cain confused. On 6th September, Charity tells Cain that Tom had been abusing Belle during their marriage and he is furious. He goes to leave, but Charity stops him as Belle doesn’t want anyone going to prison for hurting Tom and they need to do this her way. Cain reluctantly agrees and later comforts Belle, hugging her as he tells her that he believes her. He leaves Jacob’s Fold and sees Tom in the street but doesn’t do anything, instead glaring at him to let him know that he knows the truth.
A couple of days later, Caleb tells Cain that he saw Moira kiss Nate and Cain is enraged. He goes to Tug Ghyll where Nate and Tracy are and barges in to confront his son, who says that there was no kiss, he just caught Moira as she collapsed. Cain doesn’t listen, instead he punches Nate and beats him mercilessly, before telling Tracy that Nate is sleeping with Moira again, causing her to end their newly repaired relationship. He then returns to Butlers to confront Moira, but she denies kissing Nate and yells at Cain for not trusting her. He angrily insults her and she slaps him, which leads to him telling her that their marriage is over before storming out. Later, Cain sees one of the barns is on fire and rushes over as he knows Moira is inside. He runs in alongside John and Mack to save her, despite their current issues. He finds her barely conscious and hallucinating at the back of the barn and gets her out.
At the hospital, the doctors say both Ruby, who was also in the barn, and Moira will survive which Cain is relieved to hear, but Moira then suffers another seizure and is diagnosed with a brain tumour. Cain is devastated by this news as he can’t face losing Moira. He then realises that Nate was telling the truth about the kiss and tries to call him, but only gets his voicemail. He later finds out from Tracy that he took a job in Shetland and moved away, leaving him feeling guilty for pushing his son away. Cain tries to support Moira but they end up arguing when she says that she doesn’t want to have brain surgery, until she has a seizure in front of Isaac which terrifies him. Afterwards, Moira tells Cain that she is going to have the surgery, which comes as a massive relief to him. Cain also has to deal with Tom continuing to terrorise Belle and argues with Jimmy King, who refuses to believe his nephew is an abuser. After Tom attacks Belle and she ends up stabbing him with an axe in self-defence, Cain helps cover it up but Belle soon turns herself in and Cain worries she will go to prison if the police believe Tom.
In October, Cain goes to visit Zak and Debbie in Scotland for a few days to get away from his problems. When he returns, Debbie calls and tells him that Zak died not long after he left. Cain is devastated by his father’s death and has to inform the rest of the Dingles. On 14th October, the Dingles said goodbye to Zak as Cain led the procession through the village. Later at the graveside, his speech was interrupted by the return of Tina Dingle, who showed up after almost thirty years. Cain was annoyed by her sudden appearance as she mocked him, saying he wasn’t worthy of Zak’s legacy. They managed to get through the funeral, despite Tina’s presence, but Cain was unhappy as he felt he hadn’t given his dad a proper send off. He then found out that Moira had put off her operation so she could support him and felt even more guilty. That night he left the wake early and went to Wishing Well with Sam and Belle. They talked through the night about their dad and their current problems, with Cain confiding in them about how he felt like he was letting his family down. The three then came to an agreement to share the responsibility of being head of the family from now on.l
A couple of days later, Cain tells Belle that Zak knew about what Tom did to her and she is furious with him. He tries to calm her down but she can’t stand that her father died thinking she was a victim. Moira then announces that she is going to visit Adam before she has her operation and Cain has to run the farm while she is away. Cain continues to clash with Tina, who refuses to leave without her inheritance and has to help Belle when she violates her bail by talking to Tom. He faces further turmoil as Ross Barton returns and Charity convinced him to give Ross a job on the farm. However, in November, Cain finds out that Ross held an illegal boxing match in one of the barns, so he fires him as he wants Moira to have peace and quiet when she returns. He is about to throw him out when Moira returns and says she wants him to stay, which annoys Cain. Later in the month, Mandy Dingle tells Cain that Tina is trying to sell Wishing Well Cottage, so he goes to the house and sets her caravan on fire, leaving Tina homeless.
On 20th November, Moira has the operation to remove her brain tumour and Cain goes to the hospital with her. Once she goes under, he leaves the hospital and heads to the garage where he drinks a bottle of whiskey. He is interrupted by Ruby barging in and Cain tells her to leave him alone. They argue, but soon end up kissing and have sex in the garage. Cain immediately feels guilty for cheating on Moira and goes for a walk where he meets Jimmy King. Jimmy taunts him about Belle being a liar and Cain attacks him, beating him badly. He then heads back to the hospital to see Moira, whose operation was a success.
Over the following weeks, Cain is wracked with guilt over his fling with Ruby and becomes distant toward Moira as she recovers. Moira is annoyed with his behaviour and comes to believe he can’t be trusted with responsibility. She confronts him about this and he apologises but Moira says that isn’t enough, before revealing that the kids are throwing him a surprise birthday party and that he better show up. After this, Cain does his best to be attentive to Moira and she is pleased by his attempts to do better. However, Cain misses Moira’s follow up appointment after he gets arrested for vandalising Jai Sharma’s car and shouting at PC Swirling. Moira then hides the fact that she needs radiotherapy from him as she believes he can’t handle it, but when Cain finds out, he asks the doctor for all the information on radiotherapy, before going to Moira and promising to be there for her.
Cain is uncomfortable when Moira insists on going to Caleb and Ruby’s for Christmas and later, when everyone has gone to the pub, Cain returns to look for his phone but sees Ruby threatening her father, Anthony Fox with a knife. They laugh it off and Anthony leaves but Cain tries to get Ruby to tell him what is happening. She brushes him off and sends him on his way, but Cain cannot help telling Caleb to keep an eye on Anthony.
2025 to present: Nate’s death[]
In January 2025, Cain is horrified to learn that Ruby was sexually abused by her father as a teenager but Chas made him promise to keep quiet. On 20th January, Cain was worried when he heard that Caleb had driven off with Anthony and went looking for them. After he heard a gunshot, Cain found Caleb in a barn and he then confessed about his plan to kill Anthony for what he did to Ruby, but Anthony had knocked him over and ran off. A couple of weeks later, Cain was told that Ruby had killed Anthony after Aaron beat him up and they had used the garage to scrap his car. Cain was angry to be dragged into the lie, but promised to go along with it.
Cain was stunned when on 12th February, he was arrested in connection with Anthony’s disappearance. The police questioned him about stripping down Anthony’s car, but Cain denied any knowledge of what happened to Anthony after that. The next day, Liam invited Cain on Valentines boy’s night out and Moira encouraged him to go, so on 14th February 2025, Cain went with them in the limo. As they were driving, Caleb began questioning Cain about family loyalty, which confused him until Caleb revealed that Cain had slept with Ruby to everyone in the limo. Soon, they were forced to swerve as they almost crashed into an oncoming lorry and Caleb pulled over, with everybody getting out and berating Cain for his infidelity, especially Matty and Mack.
Once they were out of ear shot of the others, Caleb told him that it was him who called the police on him for Anthony’s death, which angered Cain but Caleb then started beating Cain. He didn’t fight back and Caleb was soon pulled away by the others, who decided to drive off and leave Cain to find his own way back, with Matty saying that he had to tell Moira the truth or he would. Later, Cain returned home and Moira questioned him about his injuries but he sat her down and confessed about his fling with Ruby, devastating Moira. She stormed off to see Ruby and Cain was going to follow her, but he got a phone call telling him that Amy was in hospital and he had to take Kyle to see his mother. He supported Kyle and stayed with him, despite Matty saying he shouldn’t be there. Soon, Amy passed away from a cardiac arrest and Cain had to tell Kyle his mother was gone. The next day, Cain tried to be there for Kyle, but Mack revealed what had happened with him and Ruby, which caused a rift between Cain and Kyle. Cain also clashed with Caleb over being framed for killing Anthony and he almost revealed too much in a public row. Chas’s mediation proved pointless as Cain threatened to kill Caleb if he ever tried something like that again.
In March, Moira threw Cain out of Butlers and he ended up sleeping in the Woolpack back room. The day after, he took Moira to a radiotherapy appointment as Mack was ill, but she refused to speak to him and when he begged her to tell him that it wasn’t over, she walked away. However, Moira soon changed her mind and summoned him back to Butlers, where she told him that she wanted to try to fix things. Cain eagerly agreed and they kissed, officially getting back together. Though, Matty and Mack expressed their disapproval and were openly hostile toward Cain. This came to a head at Amy’s funeral, where Cain had an emotional talk with Matty and told him he thought of him as his son, leading to a reconciliation between them.
Over the following weeks, Cain had to stop Caleb from killing the newly returned Joe Tate, who had taken Caleb’s kidney. After saving Joe from being run over by Caleb, Cain made a deal with Kim to appease a furious Caleb and keep Joe from reporting his suspicions about Anthony. Then in May 2025, Cain started to wonder about Nate as he learned he had not been sending financial support to his wife and daughter, so he was going to travel to Shetland to search for Nate but decided that if Nate wanted to abandon his family then he would let him. A few weeks later Cain was left devastated when Nate’s body was found in the lake. He was taken in for questioning after Tracy told the police about him attacking Nate on the day he left. He was soon released but struggled to cope with his loss and Tracy’s accusations against him. Cain then began to suspect Tracy as he believed she was trying to deflect attention from herself and he felt this was confirmed when Nate’s phone was found on Tracy’s property, vowing to make Tracy pay for killing him.
