Daniel R. Hawkins was a cowman at Home Farm during October 1980 and leaving in March 1983. By October 1980 he had worked for the estate since the Verney days and was a very experienced cowman. In late 1980, Daniel wanted a pay rise, and he, John Tuplin and the other the workers fought for one, and got the union involved. a 5% pay rise was soon agreed. In March 1983 Daniel and his colleagues were asked to clear up some building waste. Daniel had back problems and felt he was just a cowman, not a navvy. But Daniel was told that he was not just a cowman but a general labourer when his boss Alan Turner wanted him, Tuplin and Jock MacDonald to clear out a lot of rubble from Primrose Dingle. Daniel claimed his back would not take it at his age. Turner threatened Daniel and his colleagues with the sack if they did not tow the line, but in the end an arrangement was made, they agreed to clear the dingle on overtime. In October 1983, he was still working for Home Farm when redundancies were announced. He left Home Farm shortly afterwards. Daniel's successor as the Home Farm cowman was Bill Middleton.
