Edith Haywood was the wife of vicar Charles Haywood and the mother to John, Rose and Arthur Haywood. After hearing about the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, Charles began to spread around news that a huge war could break out. Edith thought this was ridiculous and soon got sick of everyone going on about it. When the Haywoods' maid, Mildred, left for Keighley, Edith had to learn to do the housework. Rose would sometimes assist her, but would otherwise be busy comforting the injured at the hospital.
