2017 was Emmerdale's 46th year. Production was overseen by Iain MacLeod.

319 episodes were broadcast during the year. Major storylines included the death of Ashley Thomas, Emma Barton's death at the hands of Moira Dingle, Rebecca White falling pregnant after a one-night stand with Robert Sugden, Faith Dingle's return and attempts to repair her relationship with her children Cain and Chas, Aaron Dingle's homophobic abuse while in prison and Rhona Goskirk being raped by her husband Pierce Harris.

Viewership

The average viewing figure for the year was 6.44 million viewers, which was up 430,000 on 2016. However, part of the reason for the rise in viewing figures was that 2017 was the first year to fully benefit from BARB combining the viewing figures from the main ITV channel with those of ITV HD and ITV+1. This figure does not include the small percentage of viewers who watched on tablets, PCs and smartphones, which BARB did not include in the viewing figures until August 2018. The most-watched episodes of the year were Episode 7712 (3rd January 2017) and Episode 7714/7715 (5th January 2017), both with 7.54 million viewers, while the least-watched episode was Episode 7925 (1st September 2017), with 5.10 million viewers. 40 episodes ranked within the weekly top 10 for all UK TV, which was 24 more than the year before.
