After crashing their car, [[Ashley Thomas|Ashley]] and [[Louise Appleton|Louise]] are trapped, with Ashley critically injured. [[Simon Meredith|Simon]] and [[Nicola King|Nicola]] drive past but don't see the crashed vehicle. Louise's cries are eventually heard by [[Paddy Kirk|Paddy]] and he rushes to help. Soon enough, [[Emily Kirk|Emily]] and [[Laurel Thomas|Laurel]] arrive and the emergency services are called. A paramedic states that Ashley's trapped leg may have to be amputated. [[Tricia Dingle|Tricia]] is getting ready to leave the village and [[Diane Sugden|Diane]] gives her a letter from [[Marlon Dingle|Marlon]]. Tricia leaves and goes to the bus stop, but then takes cover in a phone box, at which she uses the time to read Marlon's letter. Meanwhile, [[Donna Windsor|Donna]]'s 18th birthday party is in full swing at [[the Woolpack]]. [[Bob Hope|Bob]] presents her with a gift - a car. However, shortly after going back inside, the pub's sign blows off its hinges and dents the roof. [[Rodney Blackstock|Rodney]] and [[Danny Daggert|Danny]] go to the Dingles for cover, where they are having a New Year's celebration. On the farm, [[Jack Sugden|Jack]] and [[Andy Sugden|Andy]] try desperately to get their animals to safety, at which point they are successful. Inside, [[Katie Sugden|Katie]] tends to [[Robert Sugden|Robert]]'s cut hand in a passionate clinch. As Tricia reads through the letter, she finally realises how much Marlon loves her and returns to the Woolpack. However, disaster strikes when a nearby tree is struck by lightning, making Tricia stumble back, while another bolt hits the Woolpack roof, causing a window to collapse down on Tricia and sending the chimney to fall through the ceiling and into the packed pub. The pub is evacuated and Diane and Marlon discover Tricia lying under the rubble. Soon enough, the emergency services are called and Tricia is taken to hospital in a helicopter. The storm tightens its grip on the village and Marlon and Tricia's hopes and dreams are snatched away as their world comes crashing down around them.

Plot

Louise is conscious after Ashley crashes the car into the river, but Ashley isn't responding at all. Louise is trapped and can't reach her mobile, so she has to cry into the storm for help. Ashley regains consciousness - one leg is trapped, and he can't feel anything in the other. Simon and Nicola miss the crashed car when they get to the blocked bridge, but Paddy gets out to look on his way to a call and hears their cries. He calls for help immediately, but the ambulance can't get Ashley out without the fire brigade - and they've only got ten minutes to cut him out.
