Ethel Ainsworth (nee Troggett) was the short-term girlfriend of Amos Brearly. Recently widowed in March 1974, Ethel fell for Amos. However, she got with Dan Middleton before finally getting with Amos. Amos's friend Henry Wilks would continuously tease Amos over Ethel, but when he brought up the subject of marriage, Amos realised he didn't want to marry her. Suspecting she might propose, he tried to put it off as much as possible, even involving regular customer Dryden Hogben, which only managed to drive her away. She had a brief relationship with The White Lion owner Cyril Snape, who proposed to her and she happily accepted, informing Amos that their relationship was over. Relieved, Amos never saw Ethel again.
Ethel was mentioned in November 1975 when Henry said the Woolpack has never been so clean since Ethel Ainsworth was here.
