Ernie was a member of a motorcycle gang consisting of himself, Joss and Tone, that would often hang out outside of Transport Cafe. In January 1984, Jackie Merrick sold Ernie a motorbike he had stolen from Harry Mowlam, doing a rather poor repair job. Whilst riding on it, the bike broke down and Ernie was infuriated to learn he had been done as the bike was broken beyond repair. He confronted Jackie, and beat him up when Jackie told him that there was no refunds, however Henry Wilks broke up the fight and lead Jackie's hand into giving the money back.
