In September and October 1986, a gypsy man and his fellow gypsies camped in a field behind the railway viaduct in Beckindale. The gypsy man frequented The Woolpack and occasionally him and his fellow gypsies annoyed landlord Amos Brearly, and Amos thought he had a gypsy curse. Amos gave the gypsies a bottle of drink, and they gave him a potion back, as they felt they always give someone something in return. A day later, the gypsies waved goodbye to Amos as they left the village. By accident, Amos found the potion from the gypsies was great at cleaning so him and Henry Wilks cleaned all their brass ornaments with the potion.
