Hazel is the mother of the late Andrea Tate and grandmother to Millie Tate.
In November 2021, Andrea's boyfriend prior to her death vicar Charles Anderson called her to attend a memorial service for Andrea. When Hazel arrived she immediately layed into Andrea's ex-mother-in-law Kim Tate. Hazel then told Kim that she would take Millie home with her, revealing that Andrea named her as Millie's legal guardian before she died, however Kim tried to convince Millie to stay with her by bribing her with Home Farm and Princess the dog. However Millie decided to go with Hazel. When Hazel and Millie pulled into Hazel's driveway, Hazel told Millie she had a surprise for her and to Millie's shock her presumed dead father Jamie Tate appeared. Hazel and Jamie had been planning to take Millie away from Kim as they both believed her to be a bad influence.
In April 2022, Kim contacted Hazel asking her to bring Millie to Thomas' christening, however Hazel lied that Millie was ill. The day before the christening, Gabby Thomas showed up at Hazel's house and convinced her to let Millie go to the christening. On the way to Emmerdale, Hazel warns Millie not to mention Jamie. At the party Hazel's keeps a close eye on Millie. When Hazel is left alone in the living room of Home Farm, she searchs the drawers for Millies passport and takes it without Kim's knowledge. When Hazel finds Gabby trying to get Millie to open up, she decides it is time for she and Millie to leave. Hazel and Jamie later moved away to keep Kim from finding them.
In September 2022, Jamie wanted to leave the country with Millie and Hazel tried to stop him. They argued and Jamie pushed Hazel down the stairs then fled, leaving her badly injured. She was taken to hospital, where she was visited by Kim and told her everything about Jamie. Hazel allowed Millie to stay with Kim for a few weeks until she recovered from her injuries. Once she got better, Hazel took Millie back.
