James Francis "Jamie" Tate is the son of Kim and Frank Tate, the ex husband of Andrea Tate and the father of Millie and Thomas Tate. He was a former partner in Emmerdale Veterinary Surgery.
Biography[]
1995-1996: Pregnancy and Kim's deal with Frank[]
Kim Tate discovered she was pregnant in December 1995. Her husband Frank was initially delighted with the news but soon learned he might not be the father of his wife's unborn child after overhearing a conversation between Dave Glover and Biff Fowler. Both Kim and Dave were convinced Dave was the baby's father although Frank thought he was so he began plotting against Kim and planned to take the baby away from her. After Frank caught Kim and Dave in bed together, Kim pretended to be suffering pains in her stomach and was put on bed rest so Frank allowed her to stay at Home Farm. Frank soon changed his mind about Kim staying at Home Farm but Kim refused to leave and even moved Dave in. Dave hated living at Home Farm so decided to rent Annie's Cottage instead and soon Kim followed although she wasn't happy there so the pair began looking for a larger house but they couldn't finalise anything without Kim's divorce payout from Frank.
When Kim brought up the settlement with Frank, he offered her £1,000,000 on two conditions - she put his name on the baby's birth certificate and she never saw Dave again. As Kim was thinking over Frank's offer, Dave proposed to her and she accepted. A few days later, Kim collapsed and was rushed to hospital where she was diagnosed with high blood pressure and put on complete bed rest. Whilst Kim was in hospital, Frank visited her and gave her a new ultimatum, ditch Dave, put his name on the birth certificate and move back into Home Farm and in return she'll get £1,000,000, otherwise, she'll get nothing. Kim struggled to chose between Dave and money but eventually chose money and accepted Frank's offer.
Frank moved Kim into an attic room at Home Farm and employed Nurse Jean Bell to keep an eye on her night and day. Kim soon grew detached from her unborn baby and even considered trying to abort the baby by falling off a horse which had caused her miscarriage back in June 1992. Kim didn't intend to care for her baby or form any sort of bond with her child when he or she was born but Frank believed this was important for the child so told Kim she would need to stick around for the baby's first year and bond with them if she wanted her money.
1996-1997: Birth, fire and DNA test[]
James is rushed onto a ventilator immediately after being born.
Kim went into labour in September 1996. It was a long labour and the baby became distressed so Kim was rushed into theatre for an emergency caesarean section. Kim delivered an 8lb 4oz baby boy at 9.35 pm on 24th September 1996. The baby was immediately taken to the special care baby unit and needed to be put on a ventilator as he was born acidotic having been deprived of oxygen in the womb - meaning he was unable to breathe unaided. Frank feared the baby may be brain damaged but vowed to love him just the same. He arranged for the baby to be christened and named him James Francis Tate.
James was allowed home from hospital in October 1996. Kim had no interest in the baby so Frank hired nanny Sophie Wright to take care of him. When James was about a month old, Kim began to show an interest in her son. She bought him a teddy bear and began to spend more and more time with him.
Dave Glover saves baby James from the Home Farm fire.
Kim and Dave planned to take James and leave Emmerdale on Christmas Eve. As Kim and Dave were arguing with Frank about their plans to leave, a fire broke out in James' nursery. Dave burst in and was able to rescue James from his cot and pass him out the window to Frank but Dave became trapped in the nursery as a fireball ripped through the room. Dave was rushed to hospital where he later died.
After Dave's death, Frank decided to find out once and for all who baby James' biological father was. He arranged for a blood test which showed he was James' father. The realization that Dave wasn't James' father devastated Kim and she grew distant from her son once again whilst Dave's mother Jan refused to accept that James wasn't her grandson.
1997-1999: Kidnapping, second DNA test and leaving Emmerdale[]
In February 1997, Kim faked her death and fled to Mauritius, leaving James with Frank. Kim set Frank up for murder, and subsequently, he was arrested. Whilst Frank was on remand, Frank's two children, Chris and Zoe, plus nanny Sophie were left to look after James. Frank was eventually released from prison in May as there wasn't enough evidence to build a case against him. Later that month, Kim returned to Home Farm very much alive and offered Frank a deal - she would clear his name in return for James but Frank refused. As Frank grabbed Kim by the throat, he collapsed. Frank begged Kim to help him, even offering her James, but Kim left her son's father to die. On the day of Frank's funeral, Kim took James back.
A few days before Christmas, Kim and her fiancé, Steve Marchant returned home from the Oakwell Christmas bash to find a frantic nanny and no sign of James. As the police and villagers searched for James, Ned Glover noticed his wife Jan was acting strangely. Mentally unstable Jan had taken James to an abandoned hospital believing he was Dave. Jan and James were eventually found on Christmas Day and James was reunited with Kim.

In July 1998, Steve rushed James to Hotten General Hospital. A seriously ill James was diagnosed with a serve case of respiratory infection Croup which was made worse as he also had asthma. Both Kim and Steve felt awful for not noticing James' breathing difficulties before so now it would need to be treated with daily medication. The following month, Kim and the Glovers had a second DNA to find out once and for all if James was Dave or Frank's child. This test proved Dave wasn't James' father.
Kim and James departed Emmerdale by helicopter in January 1999.
1999-2019: Life away from Emmerdale[]
Around 2012, Kim was sent to prison so she tasked her right-hand man, Graham Foster, with keeping an eye on Jamie for her. At the time, Graham was in the depths of alcohol addiction and Jamie didn't want anything to do with Kim so Graham enlisted Andrea, a barmaid at the pub he frequented, to get close to Jamie and report Jamie's movements back to him. Andrea stopped reporting back to Graham after about six months as she had fallen in love with Jamie. Jamie and Andrea went on the marry, and have a daughter named Millie. By October 2018, Jamie and Kim had completely lost contact and he had been training as a vet.
2019-2020: Return and affair with Belle Dingle[]
Jamie arrives in Emmerdale in April 2019 to attend an interview for a role at the Emmerdale Veterinary Surgery. Jamie stopped his Ford Mondeo to let Eric Pollard cross when Megan Macey crashed her Volkswagen Golf into the back of him, pushing his Mondeo forward and running over Eric. Megan caused the accident as she was using her phone whilst driving. Eric sustained serious head injuries and later found to have internal bleeding. Jamie had a major panic attack following the accident. Kim later arrives on the scene to find Jamie being treated in the back of an ambulance, telling the paramedics not to let her come. Rhona Goskirk drives Kim to the hospital to see Jamie. Jamie doesn't want to see Kim and tells Rhona to stay wary of her. Kim steals his car keys so she can see more of him. Jamie later arrived at Home Farm to retrieve his keys from Kim, although she claimed she didn't have them. They went to The Woolpack to retrieve them from lost property although they weren't there. Back at Home Farm, Kim tries to help Jamie piece together what happened. As Jamie confronts his mum about her past, Kim hands back his car keys, just as Graham shows up. He tells her they're finished.
Jamie introduces his family to Kim
On 3rd June 2019, Andrea and Millie turn up in the village, shocking Kim who had no idea Jamie had a wife and child. Kim allows the two of them to move into Home Farm but remained hostile towards Andrea. On 12th June, Andrea has realised she needs to be honest with Jamie so she heads down to the vet's and informs a stunned Jamie how Graham paid her to keep an eye on him whilst Kim was in prison. Andrea begs Jamie not to let this ruin what they've got but Jamie feels like they've been living a lie. Andrea asks Jamie if he wants her to go but Jamie is unsure. Jamie insists Andrea should've told him about it a long time ago but Andrea states she didn't want to ruin what they had and assures him she loves him and vows to win back his trust.
In July 2019, Jamie created an elaborate plan with Andrea to gain Kim's shares in the veterinary practice. She initially falls for it, but realises what the two are up to via a call by Millie where they confess the whole thing, unaware Kim is hearing the conversation. Furious, Kim wanted revenge but changed her mind and offered Jamie the shares of the vets, with no strings attached, in an attempt to keep him in the village and in her life. He agreed and officially became a partner in the practice.
In late August 2019, Andrea and Jamie were worried after they were unable to obtain a place for Millie at Connelton Primary School and had no other school that close. Kim then suggested that Millie could go to Baswick Green Prep School but Jamie made it clear that he didn't want his daughter to attend a private school. However, the following day, when Kim offers to babysit Millie so Jamie and Andrea can look at another school, she secretly arranges a meeting with the school's headmaster, making Jamie furious when he finds out. However, Andrea eventually came around and told Jamie they should take this opportunity but Jamie was insistent that Millie shouldn't have the type of childhood he had, but Andrea managed to convince him that he shouldn't let his own bad experiences come between Millie getting a good education and they agreed to Kim's offer.
On Christmas Day, Graham burst into Home Farm and revealed that he and Andrea had slept together in the past, which had led him to believe that he was Millie's father. However, a DNA test he had conducted by stealing a bit of Millie's hair concluded that Jamie truly was her father. Despite Andrea's pleas for forgiveness and attempts to convince him she only lied because she always felt certain he was the father, the pair split.
For the next few weeks, Jamie was furious with Andrea as well as Graham for wrecking his family. He confronted Graham outside the cafe and punched him, but Graham quickly got the upper hand, causing Andrea to intervene. After Graham walked off, Jamie lashed out at Andrea and stormed off. He promised to get revenge on Graham, which caused him to become a suspect when Graham was murdered in January 2020. However, it later revealed that he slept with Belle Dingle on the night Graham was murdered. Later, he and Andrea continued their feud and after Kim sabotaged Andrea's chances of renting a cottage in the village for her and Millie, Andrea vowed that she would win custody of Millie. In February, Kim introduced Jamie to a solicitor named Ollie, who was really Pierce Harris, the man who killed Graham. Kim said he would be able to help with the custody battle, but Jamie didn’t trust him and refused his help. Kim is later kidnapped by Pierce and Jamie is relieved to find out she is okay, going to the hospital to check on her.
In March 2020, Andrea told Jamie that Kim had paid her business partner, Al Chapman to kill Graham and Jamie was horrified. He confronted Kim about it and she confessed, but Jamie surprised her by saying he forgave her and agreed to keep quiet. Andrea was disgusted by this and became even more determined to get Millie away from Kim and Jamie. The divorce continued as Andrea and Jamie fought over Millie, preparing to go to court, though neither party were happy. Then after finding out that Kim had hired a man to kiss Andrea and film it, to be able to use it against her in court, Jamie thought Kim had gone too far. He and Andrea talked and they decided to give their marriage another try, so Jamie moved out of Home Farm.
However, when Belle found out about him and Andrea she was upset and confronted Jamie. The two of them ended up sleeping together but Jamie soon called it off after almost getting caught by Andrea. A few weeks later, the vet's started finding themselves in financial troubles and Jamie used this to convince Paddy they had to fire Belle. When she found out she was furious, but Jamie admitted it was too hard having to see her every day without being able to be with her. A few days after, Jamie admitted to Belle that he loved her, a sentiment which she returned, and he said that he would leave Andrea.
Belle and Jamie's first on-screen kiss
Soon, Kim found out about Jamie and Belle, then demanded Jamie end it. Jamie refused and was surprised when Kim lied for him to Andrea a few days later. Kim soon explained that she would rather Jamie be with Andrea than a Dingle, which angered Jamie as he didn’t like Kim disrespecting Belle. On April 29th, Jamie attended a village Easter Egg hunt with Andrea and Millie. Belle was helping out at the event and Jamie followed her when she got upset after seeing him with his family. He comforted her and promised he would end it with Andrea soon. They kissed, and unbeknownst to them, they were seen by Andrea. In June, Andrea and her business partner, Leyla Harding, exposed the affair in the Woolpack. Jamie was shocked and angered by Andrea’s actions and confronted her about it. On 3rd June, Andrea disappeared from the village and took Millie with her, causing Jamie to panic about what she might do. Belle and Kim try to calm Jamie down as he worries about Andrea and Millie. Jamie lashes out at Kim as she continues to insult Belle and blame her for the current situation. Andrea soon returns to the village, after revealing she had been staying with her mother and Jamie is hugely relieved to see Millie. Jamie and Andrea continue to clash as they argue over Belle, but Jamie points out that Andrea cheated first.
On 8th July, Jamie accidentally ran over Moira Dingle on a country road, but didn’t stop to help her as he thought it was an animal. The next day, he was shocked to hear Moira was in hospital after being involved in a hit and run, causing Jamie to be consumed by guilt as he covered up his crime. He tried to hide this from Belle but she became suspicious as Jamie was paranoid and distant. A month later, Jamie admitted to Belle that he was the one who ran Moira over. She was shocked and felt she should report him as Moira was her sister-in-law, but Jamie manipulated her into keeping quiet. She then asks him where he hid the evidence and Jamie tells her, thinking she is on his side.
In September, Jamie is attacked by Moira’s husband, Cain Dingle, after Andrea told them the truth about the accident. Jamie pleads with Cain, but this seems pointless as Cain threatens him with a baseball bat. Fortunately, Belle arrives and stops her brother from beating Jamie as she reveals that she told the police about the accident, and that she is ending it with Jamie. This shocks Jamie as he believed Belle loved him and he races to where the evidence was hidden, only to find the police already there. Jamie is then arrested for dangerous driving, but he denies all knowledge of the accident and the police release him pending further investigation. To save himself, Jamie bribes Andrea to giving him an alibi for the time of the accident by promising her custody of Millie and is let off. Then in October, Jamie tells the police that Belle was the one driving, and that her nephew, Nate Robinson, helped cover it up. Nate and Belle are arrested for the crime and Jamie gloats about it in front of Cain, who is furious but can’t do anything as Jamie threatens him with the police. Later, Nate confesses to the crime to spare Belle, much to Jamie’s disappointment as he wanted her to go down for it.
In November 2020, Jamie finds out that Kim has been seeing her employee, Will Taylor and the two begin to clash. Jamie taunts Will about his daughter’s addiction, his time in prison and calls him a gold digger, making Will punch him. Kim is furious about this, and Jamie expects her to break up with Will, but is shocked when she forgives him and tells Jamie to get used to Will. A few days later, Belle told Millie she should be afraid of Jamie during a mental breakdown, and he is enraged as Millie avoids him because of this. He goes to confront Belle, but Cain threatens him into backing off. Andrea tries to use this to get him to give up custody, but Jamie says he will fight her all the way to court.
The bitter custody battle continues with Andrea as Jamie tries to win Millie back after the damage Belle did. He also has to deal with the Dingles wrath for what he did to Belle and Nate as they harass him at every turn. He begins to get closer to Kim’s receptionist, Dawn Taylor, who is also Will’s daughter. She seems to feel the same way as they flirt back and forth, but people soon warn her to stay away from Jamie after what happened to Belle. In December, Jamie is with Dawn when she collapses due to pains in her stomach and he takes her to the hospital. There, Dawn is diagnosed with an infection caused by an untreated STI and she tells Jamie to leave out of embarrassment. Dawn is awkward around Jamie after this and says they are better off friends. Jamie agrees to this and they go their separate ways as Jamie focuses on getting Millie back. He also starts taking on more responsibility in Kim’s company and gets a flashy new car to celebrate, further aggravating the Dingles with his success.
2021: Relationship with Dawn, Gabby’s pregnancy, Kim’s poisoning and exit[]
In 2021, Jamie befriends new arrival Mackenzie Boyd as they are both enemies of the Dingles. Jamie also continues to pursue Dawn, despite her insistence that they should not be a couple. He works with Kim and begins to enjoy his new lifestyle as he swans around, provoking Cain and the other Dingles whenever he can. By the end of the month, he and Andrea have come to a tentative custody agreement to spare Millie anymore upheaval.
However, Mack soon starts pumping Jamie for information about Kim and he reveals that she uses offshore accounts to avoid taxes. Mack then blackmails Kim and she is furious with him after this, saying she should never have given him so much responsibility, which hurts Jamie. On 4th February 2021, Jamie goes to Butlers Farm, where Mack lives and plans to set fire to the barn as revenge, but he is interrupted by Cain’s son, Kyle Winchester, who is hiding in the barn. Jamie left but is shocked when Kyle’s stepmother, Moira Dingle came to Home Farm and confronted him with a shotgun. She tells him that he has done enough damage to her family and if he ever comes near them again, she will kill him. Kim rebukes Jamie for his stupidity, leaving him dejected and angry with himself as she goes to bed. Jamie gets talking to her employee, Gabby Thomas, who is clearing up after a business meeting. She flirts with Jamie and confesses she has had a crush on him for a while, which bolsters Jamie’s ego and he suggests they go upstairs. They sleep together that night and Jamie sees her out early the next morning, brushing off her attempts to arrange a proper date.
Jamie hides the fling from everyone, and is especially careful not to let Dawn find out. A few days later, Dawn is accused of stealing from the HIDE and Kim fires her. Jamie advocates for Dawn, but Kim’s decision is final, not knowing that Gabby put the money in Dawn’s bag to frame her out of jealousy. Jamie decides to help Dawn by getting her a job at the vets, which she is grateful for. Two weeks after he slept with Gabby, Jamie is surprised when she tells him she is pregnant with his child. He demands she get an abortion as his life is going too well for a baby to ruin, but Gabby refuses, before going to Kim who promises to support her and her child. Over the next few weeks, Kim tries to get Jamie to be more involved with the pregnancy, but he still wants the baby gone. Mack advises Jamie to pretend he likes Gabby and convince her the baby is getting in the way of their relationship. Jamie tries this and it seems to be working, until Gabby sees that he is still pressuring her to get an abortion and promises to keep the baby, to Jamie’s annoyance.
In March, Jamie supports Dawn as she prepares for her meeting with Social Services, and confides in her about his feelings over the pregnancy. He then asks Dawn out and she agrees, which Jamie is thrilled about. After this, Jamie and Dawn get closer and begin a relationship, in spite of Kim’s disapproval. Dawn gets along well with Millie and Jamie gets her a dog to ensure she takes the news well. On the 8th March, Gabby collapses due to hyperemesis gravidarum but Jamie refuses to visit her and Kim is furious with him, but he once again insists he doesn’t care about Gabby. A few days later, Kim tries to spike Dawn to sabotage her chance at getting her son back but Will accidentally drinks it instead and has to be taken to hospital. Jamie angrily confronts her when he finds out about this and threatens to disown his mother again. Jamie tells Dawn what Kim tried to do, resulting in Dawn and Kim arguing in the street as Jamie takes Dawn’s side.
In April 2021, Jamie began secretly dosing Kim with diazepam to gain more control over her. He also continues to see Dawn and bonds with her son, Lucas. As Kim became weaker, she began to rely on Jamie more, which worried Gabby. A few weeks later, Jamie found out that Gabby had been using Kim’s memory loss to her own advantage by taking money from her. Jamie promised to keep her secret but held it over her for weeks. A few weeks later, Jamie and Dawn are unknowingly filmed having sex on Kim’s cameras that she set up to catch who had been spiking her.
On 23rd June, Kim suffers an overdose and dies suddenly. Jamie is devastated by this and tries to cover his tracks as he wrestles with his guilt over killing her. He takes some money from the Home Farm safe to go on the run as he desperately calls Dawn. The next day, Kim returns to Home Farm alive and well, which stuns Jamie. She tells him that she knows what he has been doing and that she faked her overdose with Will’s help. Jamie tries to explain himself but Kim furiously shuts him down. Then Jamie bitterly tells her about Gabby’s manipulations to deflect her anger but Kim doesn’t relent. She throws him out of Home Farm and Jamie goes to Dawn, but she already knows about him spiking Kim. He tries to get Dawn to forgive him by explaining what a horrible person Kim is and tells her about Kim filming them having sex. Dawn is horrified but is still reluctant to forgive Jamie for everything he has done and dumps him.
Jamie leaves the village to live in Liverpool for a few days but returns in August as part of a plot with Gabby to take Kim down, as he manipulates her with the promise that they will be a family. Kim finds out and puts a stop to his scheming, but Jamie is dismissive of her, blaming her for all his problems. She feels guilty and allows him to move back into Home Farm, which delights Jamie. In September 2021, Jamie’s divorce from Andrea comes through, which Jamie is happy about as he believes that he and Dawn can get back on track. However, Gabby declares that this means they can get married which horrifies him. He goes along with Gabby’s plans for a while as he tries to figure a way out of it without Gabby getting upset and going to Kim. On 23rd September, Jamie does a runner on the day Gabby believes they are going to elope. He almost collides with a distracted Chas Dingle and swerves to avoid her, ending up crashing into a lake. It is believed Jamie is dead but as his body isn’t found, he is declared a missing person. Gabby, Dawn and Andrea all believe he is dead but Kim is convinced he is alive, becoming obsessed with proving it. His son Thomas Tate was born on 28th October 2021, in the Home Farm living room.
2021 to present: Living in hiding, life on the run[]
After Andrea’s death, Millie is sent to live with her other grandmother, Hazel which devastated Kim. It is then revealed that Jamie is alive and that he has been living with Hazel. They had been planning to get Millie away from Kim for months as they believe she is a bad influence. He tells Millie that they are going to be together from now on.
When Millie returns to the village in April 2022 for Thomas’s christening, Gabby overheard her saying that their daddy loved him and was going to take him away. After this, Gabby became paranoid that Jamie was alive. She later recruited Dawn to her frantic search, trying to prove Jamie was alive as she feared he would take her son. They found Jamie’s watch in Hazel’s house but there was no other evidence of him. In September 2022, Jamie pushed Hazel down the stairs and fled the country, leaving Millie behind and having never met his son. Kim found out Jamie was alive after speaking with Hazel, then reported him for attempted murder. Kim was given two letters addressed to Millie and Thomas following Jamie’s departure, but she and Gabby decided to burn them.
In 2024, Joe Tate returned to the village and claimed he had stayed with Jamie. He said that he was doing well and they were so close they were like brothers, which is the last anyone heard of him, though Joe promised Kim he would arrange a visit for her.
