DI Jim Poulton led the team who investigated Tom King's kidnapping at the hands of Cain Dingle and his former daughter-in-law Sadie in September 2006. He questioned Tom's sons Matthew and Carl about Cain's motives and accused the two that the kidnap was an insurance job done in order to get them out of the financial difficulties that came as a result of the King's River showhome collapse in July. He received a call about a stolen Volvo estate and mobilised his officers into action. He also assured Carl that divers were on standby after they discovered that Cain was planning to drive the Volvo intoMiller's Quarry. After Tom was rescued and Cain got away with the ransom money, Poulton returned the following day and berated Carl and Cain's sister Chas for compromising the investigation. He accused Carl once more of fraud, causing Carl to shove him up against a wall, and after Carl let him go, Poulton threatened to arrest him for assault.
