Kyle Winchester (né Wyatt) is the biological son of Cain Dingle and Amy Wyatt.
Kyle was adopted by Tom and Karen Winchester, however following their death in July 2013, Kyle was raised by his adoptive grandmother Joanie until her own death in January 2017. After a brief spell in care, Joanie's widower - and Kyle's biological grandfather - Zak Dingle was granted full guardianship of Kyle and he now lives with his biological father Cain, his wife Moira and their son Isaac. Since 2019 he has also been reunited with his biological mother, Amy.
Biography[]
2011-2013: Birth and Adoption[]
Following a one-night stand with Cain Dingle in April 2011, 17 year old Amy Wyatt discovered she was pregnant. Cain didn't want a baby and paid Amy to have an abortion, but Amy couldn't go through with it. Amy eventually changed her mind, but by then the pregnancy was too advanced for a termination, so she hid the pregnancy from everyone apart from Cain's younger half-sister Belle Dingle. Amy gave birth to a baby boy in Emmerdale Cemetery on 1st December 2011. She thought the baby was stillborn, so she wrapped him up and left him in a phone box. Hazel Rhodes found the baby and he was taken to hospital. Whilst in hospital, Amy's foster parents, Val and Eric Pollard, and the nurses named him Kyle. Amy brought Kyle home on Christmas Day but she quickly realised she wasn't ready to be a mother and phoned social services to take Kyle away. Val pleaded with Amy to change her mind about Kyle when he was placed with a foster family, but Amy signed the adoption papers in January 2012.
In July 2013, Kyle's adoptive parents Tom and Karen died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Amy attended the funeral where she saw Kyle with his adoptive grandmother Joanie Wright. She befriended Joanie and began to babysit Kyle regularly. Eric became worried about the amount of time Amy and Kyle were spending together and accidentally let it slip to Joanie that Amy is Kyle's birth mother. Subsequently, Joanie banned Amy from seeing Kyle and took out a restraining order against Amy. In November, Amy kidnapped Kyle from a mother and toddler group and planned to take him to Ireland using her boyfriend Andy's son Jack's passport. Cain stopped Amy at the docks and persuaded her that life on the run was no way to live as he has done it in the past. Cain took Kyle back to Joanie.
2015-2016: Return to the village[]
By June 2015, Joanie and Kyle were living in a bedsit due to Joanie's financial troubles as a result of her late husband's tax bill. She got in contact with Cain, who gave her money to pay a deposit on a flat as long as Joanie and Kyle stayed away. Joanie was mugged and lost the money, so she took Kyle to Val and Eric's house, hoping they would allow her and Kyle to stay until she got on her feet. Val allowed Kyle to stay but not Joanie, blaming Joanie for her losing Amy. Cain's father Zak Dingle and step-mother Lisa stepped in and allowed Kyle and Joanie to stay with them at Wishing Well Cottage. Cain was not happy with the arrangement. Joanie began to allow Amy's mother Kerry Wyatt to spend time with Kyle despite her initial reservations.
Joanie and Kyle attend the evening reception of Cain's daughter Debbie Dingle's wedding to Pete Barton in August 2015. During the reception a helicopter came crashing down on the village hall. Cain looked for Kyle but he was nowhere to be found. When he learned Kyle was hiding under the kitchen sink before the crash occurred, Cain went back into the village hall to rescue Kyle, despite warnings from emergency crews that it wasn't safe. Kyle initially didn't come out, but Cain managed to coax him out and he ran out of the village hall with Kyle in his arms, unharmed, just as the building blew up. At the end of September, Joanie broke her leg when she fell off a wall, so the Dingles arranged a schedule to help Joanie care for Kyle. Cain's wife Moira offered to look after Kyle, but Cain was annoyed to find him at their house. Whilst in the village with Moira, Kyle saw Joanie and ran across the road, just as a speeding car came round the corner. Kyle was unharmed, but Joanie spanked Kyle, which angered Cain, as he was regularly beaten up by his step-father Shadrach Dingle growing up. Cain threatened Joanie, warning she'd have to deal with him if she ever hit Kyle again, although he was still adamant that he didn't want to be a part of Kyle's life. Moira tried to persuade Cain to be in Kyle's life. Cain wasn't happy when Kerry accidentally revealed to Kyle that Cain is his dad. Joanie was also upset as she didn't want Kyle to feel rejected.
Cain began building a relationship with Kyle, but that stopped after it was revealed Joanie was having an affair with his father Zak. Joanie, Zak and Kyle moved in with Kerry and her partner Dan at Dale Head. Cain eventually started seeing Kyle again.
2017-2018: Joanie's death, bonding with Cain and Isaac’s birth[]
In December 2016, Joanie was imprisoned for assault. Whilst Joanie was behind bars, Zak, Lisa, Cain, Dan and Kerry all cared for Kyle but Kyle became scared of Cain when he witnessed Cain punching Dan. Cain tries to talk Kyle round but he says he hates him and refuses to listen to him. Zak gets Kyle to start spending time with Cain again, but this seems pointless as Kyle does everything he can to wind his father up. Cain struggled to cope and almost hit Kyle when he misbehaved, leading to him believing that Kyle is better off without him. Kyle becomes fearful of Cain after he raised his hand to him and becomes closer to Zak who treats him well.
On 30th January 2017, Joanie was released from prison but she suffered a fatal heart attack in the Dingle's van driven by Lisa. Later, Zak, Lisa, Kerry and Dan struggled to break the news of Joanie's death to Kyle, so Cain stepped in and bluntly told Kyle that Joanie had died. Following Joanie's death a social worker Linda McIntyre checked up on Kyle's living situation. Linda assumed it would just be a box ticking exercise and that Kyle would stay with Zak and Lisa at Wishing Well Cottage, but during the meeting, Zak voiced concerns about his and Lisa's suitability to raise a young child at their age.
Linda was forced to look for other options and she asked Kerry and Dan if they'd be willing to raise Kyle. Kerry was delighted with the idea until Cain's mother Faith Dingle filled Linda in on Kerry's history of committing arson as well as the fact that Amy was put into care. Due to this, Kyle was temporarily taken into care. Zak and Lisa managed to get Kyle back and Zak was named as Kyle's legal guardian. Zak later gets Cain custody of Kyle but Cain revealed to his daughter Debbie Dingle that Kyle sees Cain as a stranger. Eventually, Cain agrees to start spending time with Kyle again and their relationship becomes stronger.
In October 2017, Cain told Kyle that he was a big brother following the birth of Isaac Dingle. Kyle was excited about this and enjoyed being with Isaac, but Moira, Isaac’s mother was in a bad place and tried to give him up which caused an argument with Cain. He then took Isaac until Moira could recover from her mental break and they lived with Kyle at Wishing Well.
In early 2018, Moira and Cain rekindled their relationship and Kyle moved into Butlers Farm with them and Isaac. Over the next few months, Kyle comes to see Moira as a mother figure and grows to love her. She takes care of him and treats him the same as Isaac, referring to them as her boys.

2019-2020: Amy's return[]
In 2019, Cain is arrested for the murder of Joe Tate and Kyle worries that he will go to jail. In March, Kerry brings her daughter, Amy, back to the village as she believes that if Cain can’t take care of Kyle then he should be with his mother. However, Cain and his family work to keep Amy out of Kyle’s life as they worry she will take him away. Eventually, Cain allows Amy to start seeing Kyle and lets her tell him that she is his mother. On 1st April, Amy picks him up from school and sits him down to tell him the truth. Kyle is confused at first but Amy gets him to understand and he says he wants to get to know her. Soon, it is revealed that Joe Tate is still alive and Cain is no longer in danger of going to prison.
In May 2019, Kyle's grandfather, Zak, returns from Scotland and remarries Lisa. Unfortunately, Lisa dies later that day and Kyle is sad about losing his step-grandmother. Then in October 2019, Kyle is confused when Cain suddenly moves out of Butlers Farm. Later, he is told that the new farmhand, Nate Robinson, is in fact Cain’s son and so Kyle’s half-brother. He wants to get to know Nate but Cain keeps them apart as Nate recently had an affair with Moira which led to the breakdown of their marriage. Eventually, Cain allows Nate to spend some time with Kyle and Isaac. However, Moira then begins to develop a drinking problem due to her marriage ending and Kyle is upset when Cain says she can’t be around the boys anymore.
In February 2020, after Moira has recovered, Cain lets her see Kyle and Isaac, however, things are still tense between Cain and Moira. In November, they finally reunite and Kyle is for them happy to be a family again.

2021-2023: Killing Al Chapman, imprisonment[]
In late December 2021, Kyle was trapped in a car overnight with his aunt, Belle Dingle. She attempted to call Al Chapman for help but he ignored it. The next day, Kyle and Belle were rescued and taken to hospital, where Kyle was diagnosed with hypothermia and it was unclear if he would make it as he lay unconscious and Cain was devastated as he worried he might lose him. Fortunately, he recovered and was allowed to go home.
In 2022, Kyle’s grandmother, Faith, got cancer and it was terminal. In September, she shouted at Kyle after mistaking him for Cain due to her illness having spread to her brain. This upset Kyle but Cain explained that Faith was just confused and it wasn’t his fault. A few weeks later, Faith died and Kyle was saddened by her death. Later in October, Kyle secretly followed Cain into a barn and witnessed his fight with Al Chapman. Kyle saw his father was losing, so he picked up the shotgun that Cain had threatened Al with and shot him dead. Cain was stunned to see Kyle and got him out of the barn, telling him that he had to keep quiet about this, though Kyle was extremely upset. He then left Kyle at the farmhouse and returned to the barn, but was seen by Kerry. Cain was then arrested and charged with murder. Kyle was distressed by everything that had happened but tried to hide it.
Soon, Moira and Amy knew something was wrong as Kyle became withdrawn and started wetting the bed as he struggled with his guilt, but they assumed he was just worried about Cain. Eventually, Moira discovered the truth and tried to help Kyle but he wanted to turn himself in to the police. In November 2022, Kyle tearfully confessed the truth to Amy and she comforted him. She then took him to Belfast in an attempt to protect him, but Moira followed them and convinced Amy to return.
When they returned, Moira and Amy tried to pretend everything was normal, but Kyle became unsettled when he saw PC Swirling at the Christmas Fair. Kyle approached Swirling and began asking him questions about going to jail. He was about to confess to Swirling, but Amy rushed over and lied that Kyle was just concerned for his dad, though the officer wasn’t convinced. After Christmas, Kyle’s uncle Caleb Miligan arrived and started bonding with him as he bought him toys. Soon, Kyle told him the truth about Al and asked Caleb to take him to the police station, where Kyle confessed to the murder. Afterwards, Cain blamed Caleb for this but Amy and Moira believed that Kyle had done the right thing.
In January 2023, Kyle was charged with Al’s murder and taken into custody. He was placed in a secure children’s home as Caleb’s lawyer worked to get him out. The first night he was there, he was lonely and terrified which he told Cain on the phone. Cain tried to calm him down as he panicked about what the other kids might do to him but he was forced to hang up and still seemed afraid. On 19th January 2023, Kyle was released on bail and Amy insisted on taking him home with her. Kyle wanted to see Cain but Amy tried to keep them apart as she blamed Cain for Kyle being in this situation. Kyle had lots of meetings with lawyers as they tried to keep him out of prison and Kyle became overwhelmed. He kept trying to see Cain as Amy became more frustrated.
Then in March, Al’s death was ruled an accident and Kyle was no longer under suspicion which came as a relief. However, this was ruined by Cain and Amy continuing to disagree over what’s best for Kyle and this stresses him out. A couple of days later, Kyle is in the HIDE when Carl Holliday arrives with his step-mother Nicola and starts insulting Kyle. They argue and Kyle pushes Carl into a table which angers Nicola. She upsets Kyle when she calls him a killer and threatens to get the police involved. He runs to Cain and he goes to confront her with Amy as Kyle worries he will return to prison. He is relieved when he is told that everything has been taken care of and that he will get to move back in with Cain and Moira.
2024 - present: Amy’s death[]
In 2024, Kyle’s grandmother Kerry Wyatt returns and he is glad to see her, though Amy is not so pleased as Kerry is soon arrested for theft. Then in April 2024, Kyle is best man at Amy’s wedding to Matty Barton and makes a speech at the reception. Unfortunately, Matty is arrested and falsely imprisoned in June and Kyle is worried for him. Matty is released a few weeks later but Kyle is confused by his cold behaviour.
Later that year, Kyle is told that Moira is very ill and worried about her as she is taken to hospital. She soon comes home but behaves differently due to her brain tumour and Cain tries to be there for Kyle and Isaac. Then in October 2024, Kyle’s grandfather Zak Dingle dies and Kyle is upset by this news. In November, Moira has an operation and Kyle is concerned for her but everything goes smoothly. In early 2025, Cain tells Kyle and Isaac to be careful around Moira as she will be unwell for a while due to her radiotherapy.
In February 2025, Cain takes Kyle to see Amy in hospital after she is involved in the limo crash. He is shocked to see her in such a bad way as she lies unconscious and suffering from hypothermia. As Kyle holds her hand and talks to her, she squeezes his hand, making him happy as he believes this is a sign she will be okay. He then goes to get snacks with Kerry and they are faced with a distraught Jacob Gallagher, whose own mother died in the crash. Cain then finds them and tells Kyle that while they were gone, Amy passed away, leaving Kyle devastated. He leans on Cain for support but the next day he overhears Mackenzie Boyd berating Cain for cheating on Moira with Ruby Miligan. Kyle then shouts at Cain and runs off, going to see Matty at Keepers Cottage. He is angry with Cain and wants to live with Matty, but is told that Matty can’t cope with that after losing Amy. Kyle refuses to leave until Moira comes to pick him up and stops talking to Cain for days. Eventually Kyle forgives Cain as he and Moira reconcile.
