Liam is the rich Irishman fiance of Ruth Pennington. Ruth moved to Beckindale in 1987 to establish herself as a vet, and ended up dating Joe Sugden. However, Ruth didn't tell Joe that she and Liam were engaged, and Joe didn't find out until Liam came to the village in October 1987 to try convince Ruth to return to Ireland with him. In 1988, Ruth left Liam and returned to Beckindale to be with Joe. But, in July 1988, Joe found that she was still in touch with Liam. Joe felt that every time she went out she was going to see him, or to phone him. He could not trust her any more so she then returned to Ireland to be with Liam.
