Malcolm Bates was the alcoholic father of Nick and Kathy Bates. Nick and Malcolm used to fight constantly, leading to Nick moving out and never returning. Malcolm also objected to Kathy marrying Jackie Merrick. Malcom dismissed Jackie as a farm labourer. However Jackie and Kathy married in 1988. Malcolm reluctantly gave a speech at the reception, but Jackie was killed a year later and Malcolm returned for the funeral. Malcolm returned to the village one final time in 1991 for Kathy's second wedding to Chris Tate.
