Mary Smith was a waitress with psychic abilities who worked at The Halfway House Cafe in Southampton. When Kathy and Jackie Merrick ate at the cafe on their way back from France, Jackie accidentally left his jumper behind. In February 1990, Mary was going to throw the jumper out when she has visions about Kathy and the now deceased Jackie which George Starkey relayed to Kathy. As a result, Kathy went to Southampton to meet Mary, despite Jack Sugden and Chris Tate's objections. Mary told Kathy that Jackie was telling her not to be afraid and to start living again, which Kathy found comforting. Kathy returned to see Mary again a few days later but that visit wasn't as successful.
