Mr Merrick was the father of Tom Merrick and the grandfather of Sandie Merrick and Tommy Merrick. Mr Merrick died when Tom and his sister were children. Mr Merrick's wife Mrs Merrick was a widow by the time Amos Brearly first met her when he came to Beckindale in 1948.
