Phil Fletcher was the uncouth husband of Maggie and had a son Terry. Phil was a farmer and lived in a cottage that was on the Hotten side of the village. Phil accidentally shot himself during a fight with Joe Sugden and tried to blame Joe, due to a dispute over money that stretched back 3 years. Terry initially backed his father up but the police had doubts, due to examining the gun and finding it had faults. As Terry witnessed the scuffle he said the gun went off himself, and also the gun was faulty due to Terry taking it apart then not repairing it properly, and when Terry did a reconstruction of the event he convinced the police and Joe was let off the hook.
