Pip Coulter was the wife of Steve Hawker and the daughter of Will and Pam Coulter. Will and Pam disallowed Pip from attending a church service, which lead to a loud argument outside the church. The incident was the final straw for Pip, who decided to run away from home. Vicar Donald Hinton invited her into the Vicarage, but she overheard him on the phone to Annie Sugden saying that he will have to inform her parents where she is. Pip then ran off to boyfriend Steve Hawker, who conducted a plan to get them enough money to elope and run away.

Steve broke into 3 Demdyke Row and stole a shotgun belonging to Joe Sugden. He and Pip hid in an abandoned cottage as Steve prepared the gun and he and Pip masked themselves. Pip decided to wear some of Steve's clothes so that everyone would be lead to believe that she was a man. Wearing masks, Steve and Pip held licensees Amos Brearly and Henry Wilks hostage in The Woolpack, with Steve locking them in the cellar as Pip took the takings. Amos was fooled by Pip's disguise but Henry was not, who told the police as soon as they were freed from the cellar.

Steve and Pip were narrowly caught by P.C. Edwards, who gave chase as the trio ended up at Emmerdale Farm. Steve attempted to shoot P.C. Edwards, but missed. They found Sam Pearson in a cowshed, and Steve threatened to shoot Sam in the head if they did not get a car so they could escape. Annie Sugden lended them a car without P.C. Edwards's knowledge, and Steve and Pip managed to flee.

Pip and Steve were later caught and arrested in Liverpool, but Pip received bail. Pip told Joe, who was allowing her to stay with him, that the robbery was Steve's plan, which she went along with. Steve wrote a letter to his mother, revealing that Pip was pregnant. Tom Hawker, attempting to drive Pip out of the village, publicly revealed this. Pip went missing again, but was found by Henry and Amos. Pip and Steve married, with lawyer Alec Ferris managing to get Steve out of prison for the wedding.
