Rick was a student and friend of Rachel Hughes and Elsa Feldmann in 1991 and 1992.
Elsa's boyfriend Nick Bates is unhappy when she is late returning home. She explains that she was at the student bar with Rick and Alison, and missed the bus home. Rick was next seen in August 1992 when he arrives to visit Rachel and her boyfriend Michael Feldmann. On his arrival in the village, Michael was desperate to friend him but the atmosphere was a bit awkward. Suspicions were raised when people started suspecting Rachel was cheating on Michael with Rick, which Michael fell for, and ended up making a fool of himself. He also had a bit of a run-in with Alan Turner, when Alan asks him to remove his dog from The Woolpack, unaware it is a guide dog. Rick leaves the village, deciding to go to Canada for a year.
