Biography[]

2005-2006: Alice's cancer and birth[]

Alice Wilson discovered she was pregnant in July 2005 whilst she and boyfriend Sam Dingle were living in Norfolk. Sam was scared about becoming a father and went home to Wishing Well Cottage and didn't tell his family about the pregnancy. Alice followed Sam back to Emmerdale and told Sam's family about the pregnancy and realised Sam only ran away due to being scared. Sam didn't want to return to Norfolk so Sam and Alice moved back to the village, to have family around them and help with the baby when it came. Alice had blood taken but the results came back with an abnormally high white blood cell count and she feared he had cancer. Alice didn't tell Sam about the tests, not wanting to scare him but she eventually opened up to him and he realised he could lose both Alice and their baby. Sam and Alice told the Dingles about Alice's possible cancer and they supported them.

In October 2005 Alice was diagnosed with cancer but pretended that she had been given the all-clear. The following month, local doctor Adam Forsythe read Alice's notes and discovered that she had cancer. Adam told Alice that she should have a termination, and start chemotherapy but Alice refused to get rid of her baby and tells Sam of her actual diagnosis. Sam visited Adam and asked him to make Alice better, but Adam told him that Alice will need chemotherapy as soon as possible which would mean terminating the pregnancy.

In January 2006 Sam and Alice went for an ultrasound scan and discovered that their son was a little small. A nurse tried to persuade Alice that in the third trimester the risk to the baby from chemotherapy is small, but she refused to undergo it until the baby is born. A follow-up scan revealed that the baby was in distress and Alice was told she would need a cesarean section immediately.

On 12th January 2006 Alice delivered a little boy with Sam by her side, but their son was rushed into intensive care baby unit due to him being premature. Sam named their son Samson and Alice loved the double meaning of the name and asked that he have John as a middle name after her father. Alice started chemotherapy soon after. Samson was allowed to come home in February 2006. Alice decided to stop chemotherapy and Alice decided to write a journal of advice she would give Sam and Samson as he is growing up. Due to the cancer, Alice became weaker and soon struggled to hold Samson. On 31st July 2006, Sam helped Alice to die by administrating a fatal dose of morphine. The Dingles were surprised when Sam's brother Cain Dingle took the blame for administering the fatal dose so that Samson did not lose both of his parents.

2007-2021: Early life and social services[]

In March 2007 Sam became worried about Samson and rushed him to the hospital. The Dingles were told Samson was suffering from meningitis. Sam kept a vigil at Samson's hospital bedside and even threatened to kill himself if his son dies. Sam and the family were relieved when Samson was given the all-clear. In October that year Sam decided he wanted to move out for a bit of independence but he is turned down for a council house. Zak and Lisa didn't want Sam and Samson to move out but Sam rents Dale View off of Home Farm Estates. After a day Sam asked to move back home but Lisa refused, realising they need to let go. The following month Samson accidentally drank out of a glass with vodka after Daz Eden left it out. Sam called an ambulance although Samson was fine. Sam received a visit from the hospital social worker so he ordered Daz to leave. Sam struggled financially and Zak offered to let him move back to Wishing Well Cottage but Sam declines. Sam has to allow Daz to move back in due to his financial situation.

Samson is run over.

Samson is run over.

In January 2008 Samson managed to get out of the house unnoticed and is accidentally knocked over by Val Lambert's car and is knocked out. Samson is rushed to hospital and Sam is told that Samson has broken his arm. Social services gives Sam a warning over Samson's care. A few days later Sam does a dodgy job for Eli Dingle as Carl King was demanding the overdue rent. Police officer Ross Kirk discovers that Sam had a large quantity of cocaine and arrests him for possession with intent to supply. Sam is released with a fine after he turns Eli into the police. After the arrest Terry Woods reports Sam to social services and he receives another visit from social services. The social worker warns Sam that Samson could be put into care and she advises Zak and Lisa to apply for custody of Samson to prevent him from entering the care system. Zak and Lisa worry about Sam's behaviour so they reluctantly apply for temporary custody of Samson. Sam ran away with Samson to a deserted house as he didn't want to lose his son. Zak and Lisa make a television appeal for Sam to return home safely with Samson. Sam is forced to come out of hiding when Samson develops a high fever. Sam moves back in with the Dingles at Wishing Well Cottage when the social worker says he could lose Samson if she continues to have fears over Samson's welfare and Sam's ability to be a parent. In February 2010, Sam and Samson temporarily move into Farrers Barn after Shadrach Dingle floods Wishing Well Cottage. In December, Sam receives a letter from Samson's school saying that Samson may suffer from dyslexia although a few months later he reads lines in the school play.

Sam and Lisa become concerned about Samson after he refuses to participate in PE lessons. Rachel Breckle accuses Samson of bullying her niece Amelia Spencer and insists that she is going straight to the headteacher. Samson admits that he pushed Amelia but insists that Amelia has been bullying him, not the other way around. Over summer 2011 Samson helps Sam out with gamekeeping at Home Farm. Sam's niece Debbie Dingle becomes concerned that Samson may have hit her daughter Sarah when she develops a bruise after playing with Samson. Samson denied hitting Sarah and it is later revealed that Sarah was suffering from a rare blood disease which caused the bruising. Samson and Amelia soon become friends. In March 2012, Zak becomes disorientated whilst collecting Samson from school and they end up in Home Farm woods. Sam is furious with Zak and bars him from picking Samson up from school. A few months later Zak is sectioned into a mental institution. After Zak is released Sam is wary about Zak looking after Samson and asks reluctant Cain to babysit for him.

Samson and Amelia notice that Rachel and Sam are good friends and together they leave a valentines card to Rachel from 'Sam' in Rachel's son Archie's pram. Sam and Rachel begin a relationship soon after and Samson looks to Rachel as a mum. Sam and Samson move in with Rachel and Archie at Tenant's Cottage. Rachel's sister Ali, her son Sean and Ali's girlfriend Ruby moved in with them after they are evicted. The living arrangements frustrate Samson so Lisa suggested that they all move back into Wishing Well Cottage. Sam was arrested in January 2014 after Home Farm was set on fire and Samson was distraught. Samson is released after Rachel confesses after being threatened by Sam's cousin Charity Sharma as Charity's estrange husband Jai was the father of baby Archie. Sam was not happy with the family blaming Rachel for the fire and turned up at Marlon Dingle's house with Samson and asked to stay although they soon moved back home.

In the Summer of 2014, Sam begins a relationship with Tracy Shankley but he ends it after he finds out that Samson has given away his tablet computer to get a girl to like him the way Sam was buying Tracy things. After Rachel returns to give evidence at Charity's trial in January 2015, she begins trying to win back Sam. They eventually get back together. They move back to Tenant's Cottage but Rachel tells Sam that they need to leave the village with Samson and Archie to escape Jai after he locks her in a fridge. Rachel takes her frustrations out on Sam when Jai begins custody proceedings for Archie. Sam often asked Lisa and Zak to take Samson as he didn't want him to be around Rachel whilst she was in her moods. Rachel leaves the village in August, Sam and Samson stay on at Tenant's Cottage and Sam invites Jai's pregnant estranged wife Megan Macey to stay with them when she was homeless. In 2016, after Megan gave birth, Sam took Samson and they moved back to Wishing Well Cottage. Samson had a quiet few months as he enjoyed living with his family.

2017-2022: Meeting Lydia, teen years[]

Sam soon started seeing Lydia Hart, but began to think that Samson didn’t like her and ended their relationship. Samson soon gave them his blessing as he wanted his dad to be happy, so he encouraged Sam to take Lydia dancing. In October 2017, Sam proposed to Lydia and she accepted. When they told Samson, he said he was happy to have Lydia as a stepmother. They spent the next few months planning the wedding but several village events delayed it.

On the 18th January 2018, Samson and his cousin Noah Dingle were in Wishing Well Cottage when Joe Tate sent a bulldozer to knock it down. The boys were trapped inside as half the house was demolished, but fortunately Eric Pollard and Graham Foster stopped the demolition and saved them. Sam was extremely relieved to find Samson safe, but still swore revenge on Joe. In June 2018, Samson argued with Lydia after she tried to get him to talk about his mother’s death. He ends up pushing her down the stairs and she has to go to hospital, which worries Sam. Samson is then told that Lydia might have cancer, which scares him as it brings up thoughts about Alice. This causes Lydia to break up with Sam as she doesn’t want to hurt him and Samson by dying. However, she soon finds out that she doesn’t have cancer, to Sam and Samson’s relief and she begins seeing Sam again.

On the 31st July, the anniversary of Alice’s death, Sam tells Samson the truth about how Alice died. Samson is devastated, as he believes his mother abandoned him and becomes distant toward Sam. A few days later, Lydia talks to him and gets him to see how hard everything must have been for Sam and Alice. He takes this on board and apologises to Sam for his actions, resulting in them making up. They spend the rest of the year growing closer as a family.

In May 2019, Samson attends the second wedding of Zak and Lisa Dingle with his father. Unfortunately, Lisa dies of heart failure later that day and Samson is saddened by her loss. A few weeks later, Sam and Lydia start to have relationship problems after it is revealed that Lydia’s real name is Jenny Finn and that she buried her baby when she was a teenager. Sam doesn’t know how to process this, but Samson encourages him to make up with Lydia. A few months later, Mandy Dingle returned to the village with her son and moved into Wishing Well.

In March 2020, Samson asked Sam if he could go on a school trip to France, but Sam made it clear they couldn’t afford it. Samson was disappointed and decided to pawn his mother’s wedding ring so he could pay to go on the trip. Samson’s cousin, Vinny Dingle, discovered this but promised to keep quiet. Soon, Sam realised the ring was missing and Vinny took the blame, making Sam was furious with him. However, Samson was unable to deal with the guilt and confessed to taking the ring. Sam was disappointed with him and said he couldn’t go on the trip as punishment, which Samson accepted. Vinny then confessed that he wasn’t a Dingle by blood, but Sam, Lydia and Samson said he was still family. On the 17th April 2020, Sam and Lydia finally get married, with Samson as his father’s best man. He officially welcomes Lydia into the family and says she is his mum now.

In November 2020, Samson’s cousin, Noah Dingle tells him he wants to enlist in the Army. Samson points out that Noah would fail the medical exam as his kidneys were compromised after he suffered a drug overdose. Noah then pressures Samson into providing him with a healthy urine sample, which he reluctantly does. However, he then tells Noah’s mother, Charity Dingle about this, and she informs the Army. They find out Noah lied, preventing him from ever reapplying which infuriates him. He grabs Samson and threatens him, but he says he only did it to protect Noah.

In 2021, Samson attended the Ill-fated wedding of Mandy and Paul Ashdale. He had developed a close bond with Vinny and was hurt when he lashed out at him, following his father’s death. In early 2021, Lydia has her identity stolen and is accused of pension fraud. She is then harassed by some teenage boys, who Samson knows. On 26th May, Samson threatens the boys with a crow bar to get them to back off, but as a result is suspended from school. Sam is extremely angry with him and takes his phone away as punishment, but Samson protests that he only did it for Lydia. She says that she is touched by his concern, but warns him not to use violence to solve his problems in the future, which Samson promises to do. He spends his suspension helping Lydia out around the house to make up for it.

2022-2023: Birth of his daughter, emergence of darker personality[]

On the 4th January 2022, Samson gets a job in David’s Shop after quitting his work experience in the salon because Noah told him it was girly. In March, Samson attends a party in the Cafe with Noah. During the party, Noah tries to make Chloe Harris jealous by flirting with Amelia Spencer, who had a crush on him. Eventually Chloe leaves after Noah insults her. Noah also shouts at Amelia, making her run away in tears but Samson follows her. It is later revealed that Amelia and Samson had sex that night, resulting in Amelia falling pregnant. Over the next few months, Samson ignores Amelia as he focuses on his school work and doesn’t tell anyone about their fling.

On the 26th August 2022, Samson begins teasing Noah about his close friendship with Amelia but Noah says to leave Amelia alone because she has a lot of things going on. Not knowing what Noah means, Samson continues to tease the pair and Noah thinks that it is because Samson is jealous. After an argument, Samson tells Noah he is not jealous of him and Amelia because he has already had sex with her. A furious Noah then blurts out that Amelia is pregnant - understanding that Samson must be the father. Samson is shocked, then goes looking for Amelia, and finds her outside the village hall. She is surprised to find that Samson knows and is furious with Noah for telling Samson she was pregnant. Samson tells Amelia she has to have an abortion as he has plans for his future, with Noah angrily telling Samson that Amelia had plans for her future as well. Samson is surprised to learn Amelia has already had a scan and Amelia tells him that she has had two and felt the baby kick. This causes a huge scene between the three of them, attracting a lot of attention and causing Amelia to confess the fact she is pregnant to her father, Dan Spencer, as well as Sam and Lydia. Initially, Dan believes Noah is the baby's father and is furious, however Noah states that the baby is not his and with Amelia looking at Samson; they all soon come to the realisation that he is the father, much to the disappointment of Sam and Lydia. While at home, Sam tells Samson that he needs to face up to his responsibilities and be a father once the baby is born but he just storms off.

Sam continues to try and convince Samson to be a father but Samson angrily insists he doesn’t need a baby ruining his life. In September, Amelia moves in with Noah and his family, which angers Samson as he wants nothing to do with her but his family keeps letting her in.

In October, Samson has another argument with Sam about the baby and runs away, sick of being told to be a good father. He is caught out during a storm and takes shelter under a bridge in his sleeping bag. Amelia goes into labour on the 17th October 2022. Noah helps the villagers search for Samson after a storm hits Emmerdale, and he no where to be found. Later that day, Noah and Mackenzie Boyd find Samson under the bridge and he is taken to hospital with hypothermia. While in hospital, Sam and Lydia encourage Samson to meet his daughter and Amelia asks him if he likes the name she has chosen - which is Esther; Samson agrees he also likes the name. While in the room with his daughter, everyone thinks Samson has fallen in love with her but Samson tells Esther that he is only there because he was forced to and he doesn't want to be her dad, so he won't let her ruin his life.

Over the next couple of weeks, Samson refuses to spend time with Esther and won’t even hold her, this behaviour confuses Sam and Lydia. When Amelia asks Samson to put his name on Esther’s birth certificate, he agrees which surprises her and Noah. It is later revealed that Samson only did this so he could put Esther up for adoption but he soon realised he needed Amelia’s permission to do that. A few days later, he reports Amelia to Social Services for abusing Esther and they do a check on them. Amelia is distraught at the idea she could lose Esther, but Dr Manpreet Sharma soon decides there are no signs of abuse. Eventually, everyone finds out what Samson did and they turn on him. Noah angrily threatens Samson outside Wishing Well Cottage, but he just taunts him back about having to go after his leftovers. Noah is about to attack Samson, but Charity gets him to back off before he does anything. Later Samson goes to hit the punching bag in the Dingle’s barn and Sam follows him. Sam is initially furious with Samson and tells him he has to step up for Esther. Samson angrily tells his father that he just wants his own life and not to be the afterthought in Sam and Alice’s love story anymore. He makes it clear that doesn’t want to be tied down to the village and being Esther’s dad will just keep him stuck there. Sam understands and tells Samson he will stop pressuring him to be a father, but he and Lydia will still see their granddaughter.

In February 2023, Samson bumps into Amelia in the village and agrees to go on a walk with her and Esther. He begins to bond with Esther and Amelia as he spends more time with them. Noah is mistrustful of this and Samson says he will stay away from them if Noah pays him. Noah agrees and gives Samson £2,000 from his trust fund. In March, Esther is taken to hospital with a temperature and Amelia asks Samson to be there, which annoys Noah. Samson then demands more money as he has already spent the money on trainers and a new phone. Noah pays Samson again but he continues to ask for more. Soon, Noah tells Amelia and everyone finds out about Noah paying Samson off. Sam and Lydia are angry with him and Sam decides to kick Samson out of the house. He then goes and stays at Butlers Farm with his uncle, Cain Dingle, who discusses being a teen father with him. Sam is soon talked round by Lydia, and they get Samson to move back in, but he is still angry with his father for choosing Esther over him. He then continues to avoid Amelia and Esther after this as Noah acts as a father to his daughter.

In April, Amelia tells both Samson and Noah that she might have breast cancer. This upsets Samson as he cannot stand the thought of his daughter losing her mother to cancer the way he lost his. The next day, Samson goes to Amelia and they talk, with Samson confiding in her about the loss of his mother. This leads to an understanding between the two and they make amends. A few days later, Amelia finds out that she doesn’t have cancer and Samson is hugely relieved for her and Esther. The three of them come to an understanding as Samson stays out of Esther’s life but doesn’t interfere with Amelia and Noah anymore.

In August, Amelia’s father, Dan, is charged with manslaughter after killing Amelia’s stalker. Sam and Lydia suggest that Amelia and Esther move in with them if Dan goes to prison, but Samson makes it clear that he doesn’t want that. He clashes with Sam and Lydia again as they berate him for trying to keep them out of their granddaughters life.

2023-2024: Meeting Craig, supporting Lydia, friendship with Josh and exit[]

In August 2023, Lydia introduces Sam and Samson to her old friend, Craig Reed, who is also the father of her still born son. The whole family is charmed by Craig as he spends time with them and gives Lydia a job. Samson is especially impressed by Craig and admires him for being rich and successful, unlike his father, who he becomes increasingly embarrassed of. When Craig finds out that Samson is into coding, he offers him an internship at his company, which Samson is very grateful for. He enjoys working for Craig and becomes angry with Lydia when she suggests he isn’t to be trusted, telling her not to ruin his chance for a good career.

In October, Samson starts hanging out with Cathy Hope but is wary of getting into a relationship after what happened with Amelia. On the 13th October, Lydia tells Samson that Craig raped her which shocks him. He then says Lydia must be lying and that her and Sam are just trying to stop him from succeeding in life. Sam gets angry and yells at Samson to sit down which stuns him. He then sits and listens as Lydia tearfully promises that she is being honest. Samson is horrified and apologises to Lydia for how he reacted, then promises to support her. Later, he leaves the house and confronts Craig at the office, but Craig denies the rape, angering Samson. He insists that it was consensual and Lydia is trying to save her marriage to Sam by lying. Samson says he doesn’t believe him and quits his job before storming out.

A few days later, Samson accidentally lets slip about the rape to Cathy, who tells her friends and soon the whole village knows. When he finds out, Samson angrily shouts at Cathy for being a gossip and tells her they’re done. He then apologises to Lydia as she is humiliated by having everyone know what happened to her, but Lydia soon forgives him for telling Cathy. Soon, Samson and Cathy get back together after Cathy says she is sorry for telling people about Lydia. The two then become a proper couple, to the disapproval of Cathy’s father, Bob Hope. They almost have sex but are caught by Bob, who angrily throws Samson out. They agree to try again when Bob is out, but Cathy’s friend April Windsor, tells Samson that Cathy is only using him to get pregnant. Samson is shocked by this and confronts Cathy about it, making her admit that it is true. He then breaks up with her and focuses on helping Lydia.

On the 30th October, Craig is found dead in a field and all of the Dingles are suspects after their numerous run-ins with him. The next day, Sam is arrested for Craig’s murder and Samson worries about his father. Fortunately, forensics soon determine that Sam was not responsible for killing Craig and he is released. In spite of this, Lydia moves out of Wishing Well as she needs space from Sam after he confessed to beating Craig. Samson is angry about this and tells Sam to fix their problems as he doesn’t want to lose Lydia.

In December, Samson begins visiting Lydia at Home Farm and tries to get her to forgive Sam. He gets a job as a washer in the Woolpack after begging Chas Dingle to give him a chance. Soon, Lydia decides to go stay with her mother for a while after Sam’s disastrous attempts to make amends. Samson is angry about this and blames his dad for her leaving. He gets to talk with Lydia on a video call on Christmas Day, but is still unhappy about the separation. On the 4th January 2024, Lydia returns to the village and agrees to move back into Wishing Well Cottage. Samson is thrilled by the news, as is Sam and they try their best to make Lydia feel welcome. It soon becomes clear that Sam and Lydia are still having problems, but Samson encourages his dad to keep trying.

Over the next couple of months, Samson keeps out of trouble as Sam and Lydia rebuild their relationship. He attends the local college and focuses on his school work. He also befriends Josh Cope and begins spending a lot of time with him, despite Sam and Lydia’s belief that he is a bad influence on him. In June, Samson passes his driving test and buys a beat-up car with Josh. He then tells his parents that they plan to drive around Europe over the Summer. They are unsure about this and try to talk him out of it, but Josh assures them that they will be safe.

On the 6th June, Samson and Josh go drinking in the HIDE and become increasingly rowdy. Josh flirts with waitress, Amy Barton but Samson informs him that she is married in an attempt to get him to back off. Matty Barton, Amy’s husband tries to close up but Josh insists he serve them one more drink as Samson becomes uncomfortable. He convinces Josh they should leave and reveals that Matty is trans which angers Josh. He then starts referring to Matty by his previous name and goes back inside to get the drinks as Samson anxiously follows. Inside, Josh grabs two beer bottles and hands one to Samson, before threatening Matty for the money in the till. Samson suggests they leave as Josh becomes more aggressive, but ends up joining in as Josh demands the money. Then Josh pushes Samson toward Matty and Samson gets stabbed by the knife Matty was holding. A panicked Matty calls an ambulance as Josh blames him for the stabbing.

The next day, Josh threatens Samson with prison if he doesn’t say Matty stabbed him for no reason. Samson goes along with this, lying to the police and his parents about what happened. After Samson promises he is telling the truth, Sam believes his son and defends him from Matty’s mother, Moira Dingle. Matty and his stepfather, Cain, then try to get Samson to change his statement. Matty leaves peacefully, but Samson reports Matty for witness intimidation and he is arrested. Matty is then sent to prison after being denied bail. This divides the family as Cain and Sam clash over what happened and Moira desperately tries to get her son released. On the 18th June, Moira corners Samson in the pub bathroom and pins him to a wall. She tells him to confess but when he refuses Moira presses his stab wound, causing him to cry out in pain as she interrogates him. Soon, Samson is saved and leaves the pub, feeling guilty about what Marty is going through.

In the following weeks, Sam supports Samson completely as other members of the family continue to doubt his story, even Lydia but she keeps her misgivings a secret. On the 11th July, Moira and her brother, Mackenzie Boyd, kidnap Samson after Matty is beaten up in prison. They take him to Butlers and try to force him to confess but he once again keeps quiet. He soon manages to get away and reports Moira and Mack for kidnapping. The next day, Lydia sits Samson down and questions him, despite Sam’s insistence his son is telling the truth. Samson eventually confesses the truth to his parents and Sam is shocked by his actions. He tells them that he is scared of what Josh and his brothers will do if he tells the truth, so Sam then makes arrangements for him to go on the run. Samson agrees to this and prepares to leave, but Lydia stops him and talks him into doing the right thing for Matty. He goes to the police and tells them what really happened but leaves out Josh’s name. This leads to an argument between Sam and Cain that results in Sam punching his brother. A few days later, Samson is officially charged for lying about Matty and Lydia tells him he did the right thing, though Sam struggles with the thought of losing his son. Josh then arrives and tries to threaten him into keeping quiet, but Samson says he isn’t scared of him and walks away.

Samson soon becomes worried about what will happen to him in prison after hearing the horrors Matty endured. He confides in Sam and he says that he struggled during his time inside as well. On the 1st August, Sam and Cain prepare Samson for prison as they teach him how to fight. Moira angrily interrupts them, berating her husband for helping Samson but he defends his uncle. Moira then violently grabs Samson and tells him that they will eat him alive, but Cain pulls her away. Samson later tells his dad that he deserves everything that is coming after Sam starts badmouthing Moira.

A few days later, Samson meets up with Josh on the day before his sentencing and tries to convince him to confess. Josh refuses and mocks Samson, telling him to enjoy his time inside. Samson then angrily attacks Josh, trying to beat a confession out of him. This leads to Samson being arrested for aggravated assault, meaning he will have to go to sentencing in handcuffs. On the 6th August 2024, Samson is sentenced to four years imprisonment. It is later revealed that Noah reported Samson and Amelia breaks up with him over this as she plans to take Esther to see Samson regularly. Josh is also arrested over the attack on Matty after video evidence emerges. Sam goes to visit Samson regularly, but is heartbroken to be away from his son.
