Sid Pickles was an old friend of Seth Armstrong. He was a regular customer at The Maltshovel but did occasionally visit The Woolpack. This made The Woolpack licensee Amos Brearly act rather cold towards Sid. In May 1982, Sid offered Jackie Merrick a way to earn a good amount of money by getting him pheasants for his friend's restaurant. Jackie agreed to the offer. Joe Sugden warned Jackie that Sid is not to be trusted. Jack Sugden had a word with Sid and told him to keep away from Jackie. Sid later told Jackie that he could not go through with the deal, and told him to look after himself.
