Thomas Tate is the son of Gabby Thomas and Jamie Tate as well as the half-brother of Millie Tate.
Biography[]
2021 to present: Birth and early life[]
In February 2021, Gabby Thomas discovered she was pregnant with Jamie Tate's baby following a one-night stand. She confided in her former step-mother Laurel Thomas that she was late for her period and soon enough a pregnancy test confirmed Gabby’s fears. Initially, Gabby was unsure whether she wanted to keep the baby, but she soon decided she would. When Gabby informed Jamie, he wasn't supportive and insisted she must get an abortion. However, Gabby refused and Jamie's mother Kim Tate took Gabby under her wing and moved her into Home Farm, much to Jamie's disgust. Over the course of Gabby's pregnancy, Gabby and Jamie constantly butted ends, with Jamie informing Gabby he didn't want to be a part of the baby's life.
In September, Jamie faked his own death to escape his responsibilities to Gabby and the baby by driving his car into a lake. Whilst Gabby and the other villagers assumed Jamie was dead, Kim was adamant her son was still alive. Following Jamie's disappearance, Kim resolved to get custody of Jamie's daughter Millie Tate despite Millie being safe and happy living with her mother, Andrea. Gabby was concerned Kim would try to take her baby from her too, especially when Kim arranged for Gabby to have a will drawn up which would give Kim custody of the baby should anything happen to her, so Gabby made plans to emigrate to Portugal with her mother Bernice Blackstock and grandmother Diane Sugden once the baby was born. After Kim was arrested for Andrea's murder, Gabby realised she had to get away from Kim straight away but as she was packing her belongings, she went into labour and delivered a baby boy in the living room of Home Farm with Bernice and Diane by her side. Kim was later found innocent of the murder and was released. When Kim found out Gabby was leaving the village, she pleaded with Gabby not to take her grandson away from her.
Following her son's birth, Gabby decided she didn't want to leave Emmerdale after all and only wanted to leave as she was scared Kim would take her son away from her. Because of this, Diane made a deal with Kim that Gabby would stay in Emmerdale if Kim signed over 20% of everything she owned to Gabby, about £4,000,000 worth, to ensure Gabby had the means to fight Kim should Kim try to take the baby from her. Kim agreed on the condition that the baby bore the surname "Tate". Gabby accepted Kim's terms and subsequently named her son Thomas Tate.
In April 2022, Thomas was set to be christened at St Mary’s Church which caused tension between Kim, Laurel and Bernice as they tried to plan it. Gabby arranged for Thomas’s half-sister, Millie, to visit for the day. Millie was later overheard telling Thomas that their daddy loved them and wanted to see him, which sent Gabby into a paranoid spiral as she believed Jamie would try to take her son. She became incredibly protective of him and refused to let him out of her sight until she found out what happened to Jamie.
In July 2022, Thomas is hospitalised after his babysitter Amelia Spencer collapsed while carrying him. Gabby was furious about this and evicted Amelia and her father Dan from their home. After it was discovered Amelia collapsed due to her being pregnant, Gabby allowed the family to move back into their home.
In September, Millie returned to the village after Jamie fled the country. Her visit was short-lived and she had little contact with Thomas afterwards. Jamie did write letters to Thomas and Millie, but Gabby and Kim burned them as they didn’t want Jamie influencing them. Then he gained a step-grandfather when Kim married her partner, Will Taylor and Thomas was raised alongside his grandchildren, Lucas Taylor and Clemmie Reed. Gabby then began working for Kim and had less time for Thomas, so they looked for a nanny to take care of him.
In January 2023, they hired a man named Nicky to take care of Thomas as well as Clemmie and Lucas. Soon, Gabby started a relationship with Nicky and Kim fired him, but he continued to take care of Thomas as he was dating Gabby. Later in the year, Gabby gave back the money she had gotten from Kim in exchange for the Hide, which was put in Thomas’s name for security. In June, Gabby and Nicky were planning to get married, so Gabby suggested he adopt Thomas. However, on the day of the wedding, Nicky was unable to cope with the lies and confessed he was gay while with Gabby and Thomas. In December, Kim’s step-daughter, Dawn Fletcher gave birth to her son, Evan Fletcher, who lived in Home Farm, which was like having a younger sibling for Thomas.
In June 2024, Gabby moved out of Home Farm so that Evan, who had leukaemia, wouldn’t be exposed to anymore germs. She and Thomas moved in with Laurel and her children, Dotty and Arthur. Then Gabby started dating Vinny Dingle and he began to spend more time with Thomas. Later in the year, Gabby and Thomas returned to Home Farm after Dawn had left with her kids. Kim continued to spoil her grandson, with Will referring to him as “Prince Thomas” due to how lavishly she treated him. On Christmas Day 2024, Thomas was present at Will and Kim’s vow renewal in Home Farm’s living room. Unfortunately, Will passed away later on that day and Thomas’s cousin, Joe Tate arrived at Home Farm.
In February 2025, Thomas and Gabby went to dinner with Vinny’s family. Thomas seemed to enjoy being around the Dingles, especially Sam Dingle, who played with him and messed around childishly despite Gabby’s disapproval of the Dingles antics.

Additional information[]
- Thomas is the first Emmerdale character to be born onscreen to parents who were both also born onscreen. His father Jamie was born in Episode 2118 (24th September 1996) whilst his mother Gabby arrived in Episode 3076 (25th December 2001).
- Thomas' godmother is Liv Dingle and his godfathers are Vinny Dingle and Arthur Thomas.
