Ulster Television first went on the air on 31st October 1959 covering the province of Northern Ireland. Two consortia had bid for the ITV region although they were persuaded to join forces by the Independent Television Authority. The station carried Emmerdale from its very first episode in 1972.

The station has retained its franchise to broadcast through the numerous reshuffles and continues to transmit Emmerdale to this day.
