William Petty was a man who served in World War I. However, he sustained some injuries including his left arm being blown off and was brought to the makeshift hospital in Miffield Hall. His left leg also had to be amputated due to gangrene. Whilst there, he struck up a connection with VAD nurse Rose Haywood, whom he called his 'Angel'. Secretly, he was her favourite patient but refused to reciprocate his flirting attempts. She even told him of her relationship with Mick Dingle, which she had kept secret from most people, including her own family. Rose held his hand and pretended to be his mother to comfort him, as he drew his last breath in the summer of 1918.
